First Panel

Panels 10 and 11 from my in progress comic based on Halo: Contact Harvest, a novel written by Joseph Staten.

These two panels were both really cool and fun to work on as I attempted to create an “animation cel” like feel about it, but the most difficult.

I did both of these in the same PSD file; both with their own separate line art and base colors/shades/highlights/etc for Fortitude (red robes) and the Cleric. It made it difficult with so many layers, as I am still working with the ancient Photoshop 5.0 (from 1998) which actually has a layer limit and no ability to group layers into folders for organizational purposes like newer versions. It was literally like having two separate illustrations combined into one… which you can imagine began to bog down PS (the memory hog that it is).

To make matters worse, older versions have memory cap limits. Mine usually begins to freeze up at 1.8 million K with no ability to increase that limit.

Yes, I wish I had the money to upgrade. OTL

Story excerpt - “Just as the noise of the pestle started to grate on the tympanic slits in the back of Fortitude’s skull, the cleric emptied his mortar onto a square of white cloth spread on the counter.

‘Let it steep as long as you like. The longer the better, of course.’ The cleric tied the prescription into a sachet and pushed it gently across the counter. ‘Blessings on your day, Minister,” he said with a sympathetic smile.

“I shall step forward.” Fortitude grimaced. Though today a bit more delicately than usual.

Another older sketch (size comparison test) from a small personal Halo related project I was messing with awhile ago.

The San’Shyuum (alien) is my interpretation of Zo Resken, a character I fell in love with from the book - Halo: Broken Circle.

I was worried for a second you forgot his ear testicles those are very important. You got them tho

Forget a detail on the San’Shyuum? I would never.

If I may nerd out a little here, I would like to point out that San’Shyuum do not have traditional “ears”, instead it’s described in the novel Contact Harvest that they appear to hear via tympanic slits on the back of their skulls.

If I remember correctly, this detail was most often incorrectly confused in the Halo community as their brains being visible.

The ear lobe like appendages on the sides of their heads, and the fleshy bits on their chins are wattles. The same types of features seen in roosters, turkeys, and even some goats.

Of course I realize this information wont deter the fandom from just calling them face testicles.

Halo : Refuge - Zo Resken

Today (March 7th) is my birthday so I thought I’d celebrate it this year with some personal art of my interpretation of Zo Resken, the former Prophet of Clarity from the novel Halo: Broken Circle, as he is one of my favorite Halo characters.

Sadly, the book never gave much of a description for his appearance, nor his clothing. All I had to go on was his title as a Prophet and that he was described as “fairly young”, but since the San’Shyuum are my fav Halo alien species, I’ve nerded out on their lore and had a good idea of how to go about filling in the blanks along with my own personal preferences.

And this all started out because after finishing Halo: Infinite’s campaign, I was so impressed with the Forerunner architecture in the game, I wanted to create a neat background and figured Zo would be perfect to include to kick start me being back in a Halo mood again.

As mentioned before though, I’ve often been very hesitant to post a lot of my San’Shyuum art. I adore them, but most do not so I never felt like I had much reason to post to potentially only get hateful comments towards them/my artwork. I think I’ll be changing that bad habit moving forward, though.

While I enjoy drawing the Sangheili, the San'Shyuum are my personal favorites, though I tend to shy away from sharing my art of them since they’re such a disliked species.
