prosetintmyworld:

“In an experiment revealing the importance of having friendships, social psychologists have found that perceptions of task difficulty are significantly shaped by the proximity of a friend. In their experimental design, the researchers asked college students to stand at the base of a hill while carrying a weighted backpack and to estimate the steepness of a hill. Some participants stood next to close friends whom they had known a long time, some stood next to friends they had not known for long, and the rest stood alone during the exercise. The students who stood with friends gave significantly lower estimates of the steepness of the hill than those who stood alone. Furthermore, the longer the close friends had known each other, the less steep the hill appeared to the participants involved in the study. In other words, the world looks less difficult when standing next to a close friend.”

— my new favorite psychological study, done by Schnall, Harber, Stefanucci, and Proffitt and published in the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology.

Plant a few each week, so you can harvest enough for the week, instead of all at once.

Ya'know what? They wanna be serious about this? I’ll drop some knowledge. Do this world a favor.

Shit people should have considered this a LONG time ago but you know what they say

The best time to do something you didn’t do yesterday, is today.

If i may add: it takes a bit of time and space but i would HIGHLY RECOMMEND getting into COMPOSTING! Once you get a proper heap/container going you can save a lot of money on soil and you can get a lot of compost materials for free because most ppl just throw it out, charles dowding has a bunch of composting videos and other people have successfully done composting on balconies.

Properly built and maintained compost heaps/containers do NOT smell like a rotting corpse!

As a society, we need to bring back the Nintendo 3DS

Everybody tagging and commenting “original ds too” on this, I have great news about the functionality of the 3DS,

You’re more right than you know! Did you know the current state of 3DS homebrew makes it so that:

You can install and make your 3DS hacked with about an hour of work.

There is no risk of bricking

It is 100% undetectable by Nintendo

You can play the games online

You can download and install any 3DS, DS, or GBA game and run them perfectly (the 3ds still has the GBA hardware in it!)

You can emulate the Playstation 1 on a new 3ds!

And an absurd amount more.

I’ve actually made a guide about what to do after you homebrew your 3ds so you can really understand how much nonsense you can do.

You can find it here! It’s still early, but if you have any questions or comments, I’ve left comments enabled so I can get feedback.

Happy hacking!

in light of recent news

In light of recent news I am happy to announce that I’ll be making a guide for the Wii U as well. Unlike the 3DS, the U hacks are able to download directly from Nintendo’s servers, so the closure of the eShop will heavily affect the ability to access Wii U games from a 100% reliable source.

Friendly reminder that GIMP does pretty much everything Photoshop does, and it’s 100% free. Fuck DRM and the license culture, we have plenty of open source options available to us as a consumer.

  • Lightworks is a freeware video editor on par with Premiere
  • Blender is an excellent freeware 3D renderer, possibly better than After Effects
  • Lightzone to replace Lightroom
  • Inkscape to replace Illustratr
  • Audacity to replace Audition (I also received a free version of Pro Tools with my Scarlett Solo audio interface)

If Adobe is going to be greedy shitheads, then fuck ‘em. Don’t use their stuff. Freeware can be just as good, if not better, than Adobe CC.

reblog to save a digital arts major

Reblog to save an artist.

oh jEEZ

I will keep saying this: GIMP sucks butts.

- Medibang Paint and Fire Alpaca for more cartoon style illustration

- Krita for painting

- Clip Studio Paint (not free, but often on sale and cheap even at full price) is better than PS for art and I’m about to cut adobe entirely. Even does some photo editing.

- Paint Tool SAI (again, not free but cheap) old but good, there’s a ton of hacked copies around too. Not hard to get for free.

- Open Tunez for animation.

image

I’m currently using Affinity Photo and it’s a great Photoshop alternative. One time fee only and it’s not really expensive, plus supports PSD formats. Free trial available too!

Davinci Resolve for video editing is amazing as well! :)

Another great art program to include in the list is the completely free, no download, browser recreation of photoshop, Photopea! It has the potential/customizability to be as robust as a full copy of photoshop while also being perfectly accessible to anyone looking to just do some quick edits with no strings attached.

Also, heads up to anyone using it,

As of July 5th 2021, Audacity is now considered a potential spyware security risk,

so please approach it with caution and do some research on the situation as things progress.

honestly I do vastly prefer single pov over alternating pov in romances because a lot of the times alternating pov tells me too much. with single pov you gotta go by subtext and unreliable narration to figure out what’s going on with the love interest during scenes/plot developments. you get to connect the dots more

ok so there’s a game me and my friends play called “don’t get me started” and basically someone gives another person a random topic and they have to go on an angry rant about it and it’s the best thing that’s ever happened to us at parties and car rides so I highly recommend playing sometimes with your friends

I love this idea. We used to do things like this in Improv.

Related game: “THINK ABOUT IT.” You’re given a random topic, and your job is to build it into an epic conspiracy theory, the crazier the better. You end your rant with a serious face and the command that your listeners “Think about it.”

Another related game: Illuninati. Similar to Think About It except you are given 2 completely different topics and you have to connect them to each other in a wild conspiracy rant

Rb to safe an awkward hang out

me and my friends play “World’s Greatest Expert” where one of the other players says “Hey, I heard you’re the world’s greatest expert on ____” and you have to give an in depth (and probably completely false) lecture about the thing you’re the greatest expert on. Other players are allowed to ask you questions.

The version I learned was ‘Ah Yes’ in which someone gives you a work of art or famous landmark and you go “Ah Yes, the ____” in a posh accent while making up the most wildly inaccurate history of the topic. Bonus points for how hard everyone laughs.

i am not joking we need to force teach cooking in schools. like. it is an essential thing for survival. do you know how easy it is to make things if you know even the bare bones shit about how cooking works. we need to teach teenagers how far you can take an onion and some other veggies it’’s sad that people grow up not knowing how to prepare literally anything. and i’m not talking about oh this home ed class taught me how to make chicken nuggets at home i’m talking about learning the balancing of sweetness and acidity and saltiness and bitterness and shit like that and techniques and oil temperatures and how meats cook. it needs to be taught because it’s literally not even that difficult and it matters so much

i truly believe that knowing how to cook is a basic survival concept and the fact that so many people can’t even make simple dishes is depressing as hell this is the sorta thing that should be taught at a young age. being able to take the ingredients you have around your home and turn them into a meal is like, essential and will make life so much better. you don’t need to be a high end chef you just need to understand some things that can be easily taught… but then again maybe the education system is playing a roll against this and ultimately they want you to grow up to rely on mcdonalds for dinner. i don’t know. please learn how to cook for yourself if you’re able. i’m not asking you to hunt for specific ingredients to make some expensive youtuber’s “best” recipe but if you know the basics of cooking you can do a lot with cheap canned ingredients. cooking can be affordable i promise you just need to learn how to make do with what you can get

Can anyone point me towards resources that teach those basics cus I would LOVE to teach my child this stuff but i dont know how to cook

not comprehensive but heres some:

internet shaquille’s basics but especially:

food safety + a recipe to demonstrate

how to learn to cook (just a list of subtopics, no actual tips)

basics with babish s1&2, but particularly:

  • freezer meals,
  • weeknight meals,
  • kitchen tools (although the specific suggestions are pretty expensive even with the lower end scale items the basic categories are solid, and you can evaluate what items you will realistcially need - eg. if you dont need to read temp for steaks etc the temp reader will not be relevant) &
  • kitchen care (mid-high advanced home cooking)

basic knife skills

picking the right pan for each recipe

j. kenji lopez-alt’s tips and tricks playlist

egg recipes

a little more complicated, involved, and longer than any of the rest of these but good breakdown of flavor & how and why to use the basic seasoning/flavor profiles

and then recipe channels representing various cuisines:

again definitely not a comprehensive list but it touches on most of the basics

I honestly recommend cookbooks for beginner cooks (they cost more than internet recipes, but you can get them used without too much agony.

Internet recipes are great, but they vary widely in explanation quality, which is fine if you know most of the techniques, but less so if you’re still learning. There’s an extra level of overall organization in edited cookbooks that I take for granted but that can be a lot of help if you’re starting out.

There’s a whole genre of cookbooks that are “for teens” or “for college students” which are specifically focused on new cooks without too many tools. Don’t be embarrassed to get one even if you are no longer a teen or a student. They’re just really useful.

My favourite is “Clueless in the Kitchen” by Evelyn Raab. It leads with a whole section on cooking and kitchen maintenence and it gives the recipes with minimal spices but with instructions about how to add or alter spices in a recipe, so you don’t get pummelled with huge numbers of herbs and spices to buy all at once. This copy is $4.

I once won a giveaway for a digital copy of Cooking Is Terrible by Mischa Fletcher, so I feel kind of obliged to try and convince people to buy a copy, but honestly it’s fun to read even if you’re not using it for its intended purpose: learning how to make a decently nutritious meal for not a lot of time, energy, or money.

Spoke to a gen z person the other night and apparently the young folks don’t know about the very legal sites from which you can access public domain media (including Dracula, The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and other Victorian gothic horror stories)?

Like this young person didn’t even know about goddamn Gutenberg which is a SHAME. I linked to it and they went “aw yiss time to do a theft” and I was like “I mean yo ho ho and all that, sure, but. you know gutenberg is entirely legal, right?”

Anyway I’m gonna put this in a few Choice Tags (sorry dracula fans I DID mention it though so it’s fair game) and then put some Cool Links in a reblog so this post will still show UP in said tags lmao.

Spreading the news to my followers - if you weren’t aware of this before, here’s the link to Project Gutenberg - https://www.gutenberg.org/

Project Gutenberg is a gigantic collection of books that are in the public domain.  You can read the books through the site or you can download them in various formats so you can get the format you prefer for your eReader of choice.

It is free.

It is legal.

I was reviewing the list of the top 100 books downloaded yesterday and I saw a fair few that I had to read for college classes - so if you’re a college student and your professor assigns you to read Plato or any number of older works, check here before you buy a copy.

I reread the Anne series several years back - they were free through this.  I need to reread Pride and Prejudice at least once a year, and my e-book version is from this.  Someone recommended Jekyll and Hyde to me a few weeks back and I got a free copy from this.  When I went to Haworth on my last holiday before the plague times, I brought books by the Bronte sisters with me to read or reread that I downloaded from here.  It’s a great resource.

Yes yes yes! I was honestly so flabbergasted that this young person hadn’t heard of the gutenberg project! It’s been around for AGES, maybe longer than the kindle has? And it’s such a huge project and wonderful resource! It used to be a household name (or maybe that’s just my family, thanks to my dad being a cheapskate nerd [affectionate]). I was so glad to be able to share this resource and others with them though, and I wanted to make sure no one else was missing out!

If you look at the first reblog from me I also recommended a few other resources, most of which were from www.archive.org, home of the Wayback Machine! They run openlibrary.org, where you can check out ebooks of some public domain titles! They even have the Bone series by Jeff Smith!

And archive.org itself has all kinds of public domain media including music and movies! For Dracula fans, here’s a radio show adaptation of the book, starring Orson Welles! And here’s a 1920 movie adaptation of “The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde,” starring John Barrymore, the grandfather of Drew Barrymore!

I’m so excited to see people falling in love with classic media through Dracula Daily! Let’s keep that fire blazing!

Also, if you can’t handle reading things, check out libirvox.org! it’s a free audio book project taking public domain works and people doing free audiobooks! there’s a lot of great stuff on there, but it takes things in the public domain and makes audio books out of them!

it’s a super nice project, and you can find some really nice readers there!

Also, as a heads up, if you have DRM-free ebooks, Calibre (free e-book management software–highly recommended) has a plug-in that will let you convert them to machine-read audiobooks. This has variable results (do not use for sci-fi or anything with unusual vocabulary), but it can be a huge boon if your brain sometimes just won’t focus on reading.

It’s not as good as an audiobook that’s read well, but it’s a lot better (and less distracting) than an audiobook that’s read badly.
