Everything happens for a reason

WC: 430

What did it mean to be madly in love? To Jake Sim it meant holding your hand while you walked down the street. It meant having late night talks on the phone when you both should be sleeping. It meant cheering you on while you confess to someone else, because he would rather support you than lose your friendship.

“Jake, do you think Sunghoon will accept my love? What if I’m not good enough for him?” Jake’s heart would break repeatedly while you spoke. Not only were you speaking of another man, but you were doubting your worth. Jake thought you were the most perfect person, deserving of anyone’s love.

But did Sunghoon deserve your love? Would he notice your worth like Jake did? Jake doubted it. But he would never tell you that. So he did his best to reassure you that you would be accepted. Jake put his emotions for you aside and told you to go for it. So you made up your mind that you would tell Sunghoon the next day

So there Jake sat waiting for your text to see how it went. He was afraid to text you first,  just in case you were rejected. It had been a couple hours after you had told Jake you were meeting up with your long time crush.  But finally,  his phone rang. Your voice was a sweet melody singing a bittersweet song. Sunghoon had accepted your affections. Jake thought to himself that all things happen for a reason. Maybe you and him just weren’t meant to be. So he tried to not feel as bad when you stopped holding his hand while you walked down the street. He tried to let it go when you called Sunghoon at night instead of him.

So as a year passed, and you asked Jake for his opinion on what to buy Sunghoon for your anniversary, Jake still told himself that all things happen for a reason.

And when 5 years passed and you were engaged to your sweet Sunghoon, you invited Jake to your wedding. Jake brought a plus one to the event,  but even then he couldn’t help himself from fantasizing being the one you say “I do” to.

Jake would always think of his first love. The one destined to never work out. Every person he dated could never compare. Everyone he committed to would tell him he was perfect, but if he was so perfect why didn’t you marry him? If all things happen for a reason, what was the reason for him being so miserable?

The angst is real
