I have a little girl, called Moira. She is a small girl, with beautiful red eyes.
But, due to her past and her lack of vision, she does something called test biting. She uses her teeth and gently squeezes my hands/fingers to see who I am and what I am. Sometimes it draws a ribbon of blood, but nothing major.
I have lots of tiny little teeth marks on one finger more than the others (maybe she has a favourite?).
But, I’m not mad or angry at her.
Up until Moira came to me, her short life had been sad and lonely. Now, she has a mischief that she belongs to, sisters to play with and sleep with, regular food and treats, a soft bed… everything she needs.
Now, I have to show her that she can trust humans. I have to show her that I’m not going to hurt her, or neglect her. I have to show my little Moira that I am here to love her and have fun with her.
She has very little confidence, so Moira and I are going to work on that together.
And that’s going to take time, and work. But she needs me, and I think I need her too.
