I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen people pop up to say “Why do so many people care about this when /this/ is happening?”

I don’t want to call out any particular cause, but I suppose I should give an example. I see people say “Why do so many people care about homeless dogs when there are homeless children?” more often than anything else. They drop in on a topic of people gathering funds to help a street dog recover from injuries and neglect. They put one life above another and belittle the efforts of a particular cause in favor of another cause.

Why does one cause have to be more important than another? There’s only so much we can do for any particular cause, and some people simply do not have the resources to help in every situation, so they help with what they can, and what they feel most passionate about.

I choose to help animals. Does it mean I don’t care about people issues? Not at all. I care about every living creature out there, be it human or animal, and I value all lives. I don’t run around posting to other causes “you shouldn’t care about this when there are suffering animals.” It just makes no sense. I believe everyone is entitled to care about whatever cause they feel most passionate about, and whatever cause they feel they can provide the most to. I, for example, have access and knowledge about animals. I just know animals better, so I strive to help animals. It does not mean I wish for others to stop their efforts with people - in fact, I love that there are people out there just as passionate about those efforts as I am for animals! It helps retain balance and creates a world where everyone is receiving help, be it animals or humans.

Stick to what you are passionate about, and do not degrade other causes because you feel they are lesser than what you stand for. Value all lives. Value people’s choices in who they wish to help. Be thankful they are helping a life at all, because anyone who steps out of their comfort zone to support a living being deserves respect and applause no matter who they are helping. And do not feel discouraged if you see people saying you are supporting a “stupid cause”. If you are helping better the life of even one person/animal, you are creating a more beautiful world.
