Nishinoya Yuu × GN!, foreign student Reader

Oh boi… This is my first Haikyuu story, so I’m kinda nervous… But I had this cute idea a while ago and since my Noya brainrot is strong currently, I wrote it out!

We all know Nishinoya Yuu is a brave, act first, think never later kinda guy. He knew that himself, and took quite the pride in his personal growth of challenging his fears. He wasn’t afraid to tackle troublesome tasks, or stand up to his feelings.

It truly caught him off guard when, one day, he felt this overwhelming feeling of fear crawling up inside him. And, what’s more, it was his dearest person that made him feel this way… You.

You were a foreign exchange student that transferred to Karasuno a while ago. You got involved with its Volleyball team, and thus ended up meeting Nishinoya.

He fell for you quicker than he could comprehend… And he fell hard.

From your personality, to your looks and all the way to your specific little quirks, he fell for every bit of you over and over. He was so fond of you, that, whenever you two ended up alone or in a potentially intimate situation, he was… Speechless. Flustered. His thoughts were stumbling over themselves in a pace quicker than is racing heartbeat.

It drove him crazy.

Noya wanted to get it out of his system. Wanted to tell you, express how much he cherished you – but worry was settled deep in his stomach.

And so he kept thinking of ways to confess, asked Tanaka for advice, searching all sorts of websites for inspiration… Worrying that nothing would be good enough for the perfection that you were in his eyes.

Sighing, Noya decided to let the matter be for the rest of the day. It was late anyway, and he was tired from practice. Scribbling in his notebook, he was so lovesick he kept drawing little hearts over the whole page.

I wonder how you say ‘I love you’ in their language, Noya thought, seconds later unlocking his phone to ask the internet for help. A slight blush on his face, he kept reading the words, listened to its pronunciation and practised writing and saying it.

He ended up falling asleep at his desk soon after…

“And I think… That’s all for today’s homework!”

The moment Ennoshita clicked his pen closed, Tanaka and Nishinoya let out a triumphant growl.

“We’re freeeee!” Tanaka cried out.

“Weekend, here we come!” Noya grinned, reaching out to his best friend for a high five.

The sight always put a smile on your face. Studying with your second-year friends became a habit by now, and you found yourself looking forward to your friend’s cheers at every study session.

“As always, you have to thank your dear exchange student for helping us out” Ennoshita pointed out with a smile towards you. “We would never be this quick without you around.”

“You’re welcome” you smile. “It’s a big help for me too, after all.”

Tanaka and Noya were already up on their feet, shoving their stuff into their bags and ready to head out of the classroom. They blabbered something about racing to the Coach Ukai’s store to get themselves a sweet reward before club activities would start. After giving you their thanks as well, they, of course, went through with their plan and were gone a moment later.

“They’re incorrigible” Ennoshita shook his head, however wearing a smile just like you did. Both of you having grabbed your stuff, you were surprised to see a notebook left on the table.

“Whose notebook is that?” You ask while taking it to flick through it.

“Hard to say…” Ennoshita peeked over the pages himself. “They’re both terrible at organising their notes, so… Oh.”

You stopped flicking through the pages. There was a page, full of messy, cute hearts…

And words written in your native language:

I love you

“… I guess it’s Nishinoya’s…” Ennoshita mumbled, trying to hide his smile as he watched your expression becoming more flustered by the second.

After a while of silence, in which you weren’t quite able to understand what your eyes were seeing, Ennoshita cleared his throat and made his way to the door.

“Practice will start soon. Shall we go?”

Nodding slowly, you carefully place the notebook into your bag and follow Ennoshita into the hallway.

A few hours later, you’re sat on your bed, reaching for your bag to pull out Noya’s notebook. Yes, you did see him at practice, but weren’t able to give him his notes back just yet.

Instead, you kept staring at the words for what felt like ages. And not a single second would your heart stop beating like crazy.

You have fallen for Nishinoya’s cheery, goofy yet surprisingly cool nature pretty quickly. But day in, day out, you saw how he acted around someone when he liked that person – it was impossible not to hear him gushing about Kiyoko, after all. He behaved differently around you, especially when you were all alone, so you figured he didn’t feel the same as you did.

And yet…

A silly smile spread on your face, your hand tracing the words on the paper. You could swear he put extra effort into making the letters look as nearly as possible.

Taking in a deep breath at some point, you were determined to give Noya his notebook tomorrow.

But before that, you reached into your school bag for something else….

The next day, you ran into Nishinoya before classes started. Beaming you a smile as you handed him the notebook, he obviously completely forgot that there was something inside of it that wasn’t exactly meant for your eyes to see… And you didn’t tell anything about what you saw in there. Instead, you wished him a nice day and watched him stroll to his classroom.

Man, days were always better when you greeted him in the morning, Noya thought, sitting down at his desk. You motivated him to push through the boring school day, as he knew he’d see you at club afterwards.

And so he lived through the day, daydreaming here, trying to focus there… Making it all the way to the last lesson for the day.

“… write that down” Noya registered the teacher say at some point during his daydream. He slapped his notebook open frantically, searching for a free page to take his notes on.

Then he came across that one particular page…

And he let out a panicked squeal, in the middle of class.

Eyes wide, he stared at his notebook, while everyone else stared at him.

“Nishinoya-kun, I there something troubling you?” The teacher asked.

Noya didn’t even answer, causing the teacher to let out a sigh and continue her class.

He couldn’t believe his eyes.

Next to his writing, there was… In a different handwriting, there was…

He wouldn’t stop staring at the page for the rest of the class. His cheeks were burning as his thoughts were running wild.

And the second classes were over, he dashed out of the room. Headed to the library to find a translation book, he was so full of emotions that he forgot he could’ve just opened a web translator to get the answer he needed.

By now, there was a single thought repeating in his brain:

I have to find out what they wrote.

Whatever your wrote was similar to his “I love you”, but he couldn’t tell if you returned his feelings or turned them down – and it was driving him crazy.

Entering the library for maybe the first time in his life, Noya practically screamed for the assistant to hand him the book he needed.

And when he found the word he was looking for…

His feet took him straight to them gym.

At the gym’s entrance, he stumbled into a stop, looking left and right to find you, to tell you…

And there you were.

“Noya” you called out with that cute smile of yours, mustering him with your own nervousness.

Then, Noya straightened his back to look into your eyes properly. And in your native language, as best as he could, he said: “I love you.”

You returned the look he gave you – confused, hopeful, bashful…

And replied in the same manner:

“I love you too.”
