Just in case you don’t know the man behind thissong (and I guarantee you know the song): Israel “Iz” Kamakawiwo'ole, or Bruddah Iz, was a phenomenal Hawaiian musician and activist. He spent his life making music and promoting the ideas of Hawaiian independence and the negative impacts of the tourism industry on native Hawaiian people.
(This is my favorite video of Iz, talking about his life and singing a song from Facing Future called “White Sandy Beach.” It’s beautiful. He was beautiful.)
Iz died on June 26, 1997 and is survived by his widow, Marlene, and their daughter Ceslie-Ann “Wehi.” His ashes were scattered into the Pacific Ocean at Mākua Beach on July 12, 1997, while thousands of fans celebrated his life. omg sorry for not having updated for such a long time but I was drowning in uni work and I couldn’t find a minute to gather creativity, sit down and do some art or write or whatever. exams are still on but I feel like I have a little more air now and also my creativity seems to finally come back. you watched as venti belted out the lyrics to Happier by MARSHMELLO into the microphone, in his off-pitch voice. he finished the song on a note multiple octaves too high and you couldn’t help but fail to suppress a giggle.
”what?” He demanded, thrusting the microphone at you. “if you think that was bad try it yourself!”
catching the microphone in midair you selected Somewhere Over The Rainbow. As the music began to play you started singing softly.
