Small things that irk Jin

Don’t get me wrong, I thought the episodes are stunningly animated and I enjoyed the story, but …

The genderswap of Vaatu and Raava annoyed me throughout the episode.

Yin-Yang

Yin is characterized as slow, soft, yielding, diffuse, cold, wet, and passive; and is associated with water, earth, the moon, femininity and nighttime.

Yang, by contrast, is fast, hard, solid, focused, hot, dry, and aggressive; and is associated with fire, sky, the sun, masculinity and daytime.

They played it very straight up Yin-Yang with those two spirits i.e. light and dark who are part of a whole and cannot exist without the other. They even flat-out show a Yin-Yang symbol at the end of the episode. Which made the switched voices even more grating to me.

I do not see any narrative point that was made by doing so, all it’s doing is bending a Taoist idea to what a western audience expects. I do not like the part where shadows=evil for exactly the same reason.

The ‘Dark Spirits’ attacking people might still be part of the Avatar Spirit.

If they belonged to Vaatu, then why are they attacking Korra as she tries to open the Spirit Portal. Isn’t that what Vaatu wants? Has he even been freed yet?
