Arriving Meteors Challenges the Mobile Suit! Layzner Vs. Zeta Gundam main article in the 11/1985 issue of Newtype.

Side blurb (loose translation); It’s a harsh fate of the champion to protect the number 1 popular spot: The new fall program “SPT Layzner” is now attacking “Zeta Gundam” aiming for the television animation champion.

Second page: Which is stronger? Mobile Suit or SPT?

BTW: FUCK Jerid

Lots of great looking mechs for the Layzner vs. Z Gundam articles. There’s also a production report for Windaria. Urusei Yatsura and Tobikage articles as well. What I can gather about the MTV article is that it focuses on the special effects and animation from the interesting music videos of 1985.

This issue is kinda short just like most of the 1985 issues. Newtype magazine started in April of 1985 and it was still trying to figure out the direction of the mag. But, Gundam is definetly the constant. These ‘85 issues have a good bit of sci-fi elements in them as well. You can tell Kadokawa Shoten really invested in the magazine from the start.

★SPT is an abbreviation for Super Powered Tracer, that is, super space strengthening functional clothing.  This is a combat weapon originally developed by the Ministry of Planetary Exploration of Glados, which has built up a highly computerized society, and refers to a space suit that has the function of completely amplifying and reflecting human behavior by a computer system.  However, it is easier to understand it as a humanoid combat mecha rather than a space suit. The biggest feature of SPT is that the backpack system can be retrofitted, and space type (for outer space action), flight type (for atmospheric action), ground type (for ground action), general purpose (3  Type that combines two functions) etc.  Blue Meteor SPT Layzner setting reference materials collection.
