The early issues of Newtype not only focused on anime but also works in science fiction and animation in general.
Everyone, meet Robert Abel. Robert Abel was a pioneer in CG and visual effects. This Moving Pictures article details the commercial Brilliance for the Canned Food Information Council ad that was aired during Super Bowl 19.
The News & Newtype CM Clip section of this issue (which I will post later) is dedicated to this man and his work in CG and visual effects. I really learned a lot researching Robert Abel. I will make sure to include everything that I have learned when I post the CM Clip article. He was definitely a pioneer and trailblazer in CG animation.

Hey everyone! I hope you’re doing well and Happy New Year.
It’s been a while since I have posted consistently which is going to change this year. I miss doing to this blog, I miss the interaction with my fellow otaku fam. I want to commit to being more consistent. Consistent with balance.
The reason I have been missing: I am about to reach 3 years since I started karate. I’ve learned a lot about myself and who I am through karatedo. Martial arts really took over my life and it still does, in a positive way. Martial arts and anime are my yin and yang in life. Trying to balance karate and my outside interests has been a challenge. But, I have come to a point where that balance is easier.
With that being said. OT/NT will be back starting this month. My goal is to post biweekly. If I can’t make that goal you can rest assured that you will have something for the month.
October of 2017 (FUCK, I didn’t realize that was our last post) I posted the front cover of the 11/1985 issue of Newtype. I will continue with the rest of that issue and then after that I will post a poll on Twitter for the next issue to be posted.
I am glad we have returned from our enlightened journey with hot blood and a burning fire that rivals any 16 year old mecha pilot. I promise not to ever take that long of a “break”.

Psyco Gundam illustrated by Yasuomi Umetsu on the front cover of the 11/1985 issue of Newtype.
Lots of great looking mechs for the Layzner vs. Z Gundam articles. There’s also a production report for Windaria. Urusei Yatsura and Tobikage articles as well. What I can gather about the MTV article is that it focuses on the special effects and animation from the interesting music videos of 1985.
This issue is kinda short just like most of the 1985 issues. Newtype magazine started in April of 1985 and it was still trying to figure out the direction of the mag. But, Gundam is definetly the constant. These ‘85 issues have a good bit of sci-fi elements in them as well. You can tell Kadokawa Shoten really invested in the magazine from the start.

How to Art segment in the 7/1993 issue of Newtype. Article title subline, “The original picture of the Gundam 0083 by Hajime Katoki is freely processed with state-of-the-art compter!” The name of the computer is the Quantel Graphic Paint Box and the price of the computer at the time was 300 million yen. In one of the pictures in the bottom you have Hajime Katoki who picked the image of the Gundam RX-78GP03S, Hisashi Sugiyama who was in charge of drawing the CG and Masaharu Hasegawa who served as director. It took about a half of a day to complete the image.
