Earlier today I made a reference to “Backstroke of the West”, and when I looked it up I saw that the original post was made in 2005, which means that a good chunk of people on here might be too young to remember it. So consider this post a public service.

The following was originally posted here

episode iii, the backstroke of the west

i saw revenge of the sith last weekend at a local theater with my friend joe who was in town on business. it was much better than the first two movies and a fitting end (err.. middle) to the star wars saga.

the next day i was walking past my friendly dvd salesperson and decided to check out revenge of the sith. i was assured the quality was good and for 7rmb why not give it a shot.

aside from the counters on the top of the screen and a distorted perspective it was ok- not high quality but watchable. the captions were a hilarious surprise- a direct english translation of the chinese interpretation of what the script was saying. it varied from being somewhat close to the script to being ‘far far away’….

amazingly enough, the beginning scroll is mistranslated even though the words are right there on the screen.

star war (just one)

‘the backstroke of the west’ is the english translation of the chinese title.

Very important fandom history.

I’m CRYING. I’d never seen this before. According to @persian-slipper‘s tags, this is the origin of “do not want”.

THE ACTUAL ORIGIN OF DO NOT WANT!!

Does that sound sexist to you? Because if it does, you should have realized that the original quote was also really sexist.

Men generalize, dehumanize and objectify women near constantly but get their scrotes in a twist at even basic class analysis.

12th rule of misogyny: Women’s ability to recognize male behavior patterns is misandry.

Cosplay Reference Sheets: Kirkwall Chantry Robes

Since, I’m currently working on a cosplay of Sebastian Vael in Chantry robes, I had to break down the confusing layers of this costume. I thought, I might as well share with you all, in case someone else planned a similar costume. Especially since part of the chantry robes are similar with the templar uniforms in Kirkwall.

I simplified certain parts for the sake of saving Material and also, because I’m going to wear this in June, when it will be friggin hot in those layers. I also used my own bodytype for this reference-sheet. So  it isn’t quite as broad-shouldered, as Sebastian himself looks in those robes. Under the cut, I put the pictures of each layer over another and explain a little bit something.

I hope it can be useful for some of you!

Likeif you found it useful. Reblog, if you want to share it with friends. ;)

New Blog Post! It is the time of year for resolutions. It is also an opportunity to name the ways in which we hope to become the best versions of ourselves. One of my hopes is that all of us aspire to never stop learning new things.

I chose this picture because it reflects so much of what I was trying to get across. The world can be cruel. It can really ware us down over time. But I hope to never let it steal my sense of joy and wonder. I’m just learning from the best old man I know.

hiveworks:

Our statement on Kickstarter’s recent announcement

Hiveworks is an independent, artist-run studio and publisher of webcomics and graphic novels, providing service to almost 200 creators for over a decade. Crowdfunding has been an important part in allowing diverse voices to flourish and maintaining creators’ independence.

Since 2012, Hiveworks has been a long-time, returning client of Kickstarter, having hosted 17 successful projects and assisted with dozens more. Over time, we earned the trust of our backers and built strong, wonderful relationships with Kickstarter staff, which is why the platform remained the #1 choice for our company.

Unfortunately, we are disappointed to learn that Kickstarter intends to pivot into blockchain. As a company, we are strongly against blockchain, including its use as a facilitating token for crowdfunding artistic projects, most prominently in the form of NFTs. It’s hard to view Kickstarter’s pivot to blockchain as something that will truly help Kickstarter in its main mission– helping projects come to life.

If Kickstarter decides to move forward with blockchain we’ll be shifting to an in-house pre-order system as per creator preferences, which will be rolled out paired with the next planned Kickstarters we have already scheduled.

Signed,
The Hiveworks Team

This is relevant to the future of the print publication of Alexander Comic.

I’m highly disappointed by the news yesterday regarding Kickstarter’s hype-based pivot to cryptocurrency. (You may read about it in the blog post written by their founder on the KS site)

From its birth I knew Alexander was never meant for mainstream traditional publishing (at this time): it’s too risky, too artsy, too adult and big and expensive. The market right now is all about middle-grade graphic novels. So what else could Alexander be, but a webcomic and a crowdfunded series of thick, gorgeously printed books?

So much of Alexander’s Books 1, 2, 3 and 4 were hinged on Kickstarter, which is the sole primary crowdfunding platform of my publisher Hiveworks. But with the news now, I am very, very lost as to how to publish Alexander.

Given the particular type of creator that I am, nurtured by the old internet that was for libraries and global open scholarship (the world at our fingertips, the world’s encyclopedia, the information superhighway, etc), developed and built by volunteers, growing up in spaces surrounded by artists on free platforms who created art for community and mutual support, where my practice has always come from the passionate and the generous… Not to mention my personal and creative disdain for speculation, scarcity and ego in the art market. And my jadedness from 8+ years of witnessing the rise and fall of unicorn tech startups, online wellness scams, the increasing corporatisation of the internet, the harmful impact of N-F Tokens in my circles…

I can’t support KS in their decision to introduce NF-Ts and encourage the NF-T market into their space… (even though their blog doesn’t say it, this is the kind of people they will inevitably attract). If you’ve followed the discourse since April like I have, you’d know it’s like putting fishsauce into a cake batter. The prognosis isn’t good. (Here’s a very good explainer by someone in tech - my feelings about the chain, the tokens, etc are informed by this piece)

If they go through with it, I’ll have to figure out other ways to establish preorders. For now, me and Alexander are in a limbo. We’ll see how KS responds to the backlash.

If you are also against Kickstarter’s pivot, you may submit a statement through this Airtable form.
I’m in direct contact with a KS staff member, and all statements will be sent directly to the top. I’d advise non-comics creators to contact their outreach leads, but the form is open for them too.

EDIT: I accidentally put the wrong link for the airtable lol

Writer friends, I discovered a fun website today. It’s called “I Write Like” and here’s the description:

Check which famous writer you write like with this statistical analysis tool, which analyzes your word choice and writing style and compares them with those of the famous writers.

Let me know which autor you got!

Haha this was fun :P (I’m pretty sure they only put cool authors on there, so all results are good results).

College Tennis: Origin Story

David Foster Wallace wrote a pretty great book on tennis (String Theory) and his magnum opus (Infinite Jest) was about a tennis player, so I’m not sure if the code was just picking up on the tennis, or if College Tennis really does read like a 1,000 page epic that has been called the “Gen-X Ulysses”.

Merry Crisis

Heck yeah, this one I can get behind.

I took my intros for both DDWCaPH! and IAC, and I got Cory Doctorow both times. I’ve never heard of him before in my life.

I plugged in three texts and got: Dan Brown for a chapter of BFS (god help us all), Agatha Christie for an original period romance (weird, but okay), and Oscar Wilde for a short based on Turncoat Chronicle (weird but fun).

There’s a post with a photo of two guys secretly shaking hands. One is labelled “landlords charging $2000 a month for rent” and the other is “banks that say you can’t afford a $600 mortgage”.

I don’t want to interact with the post and invite Discourse or whatever, but the people being like “why would a mortgage be that low if rent is so much?” are not understanding it correctly.

OP is not saying a mortgage is necessarily that cheap. They’re saying that a person who has to pay way too much in rent is not allowed to qualify for a big enough mortgage to buy anything. The bank is saying “you can’t afford more than $600 a month (:” while there is evidence the person can manage to pay a lot more than that because they’re Allowed to pay 3+ times that amount in rent every month.

A good rule to live by is that if you hate some piece of media, you should care less about it, devote less energy to it, and spend less time thinking about it than the people who like it. This isn’t even a “don’t criticize” or “positive vibes only” thing, it’s more of an “if you talk about hating it more than the fans talk about liking it, the net result is that you’re the one keeping attention fixed on it”

“A lot of people online vocally hate the development in the show and have made a million posts calling on people to stop watching it, and also they watch every episode and comment on the new developments they’re enraged by” is a great way to get the show to keep doing developments like that (look how much engagement it nets!) and also, especially if the outrage is for legitimate social reasons, an EXCELLENT way to ensure that all the creeps online see your objections and suddenly take an interest in supporting it, where they wouldn’t have before.

“A lot of people online realized they hate the show now, so they just sorta stopped watching and stopped talking about it” usually ends up causing the show to fall out of public favor and get cancelled

If you currently play any of the Cookie Run Games [Ovenbreak, Puzzle World, Kingdom] this relates to you.

Not too long ago, it was announced that Devsisters was planning on making NFTS on the official Devsisters website.

Why is this bad?

NFTS [Non fungible tokens] are notorious for costing an absurd amount of money, as well as doing catastrophic damages to the environment in their production. [Read more about NFTS affects on the environment here, or search up ‘what do NFTS do?’ On your search engine.] It isn’t like Devsisters is oblivious to what NFTS do, as there are hundreds of sources as to why NFTS are terrible for the environment, as well as them being fully capable of being able to research them.

This is especially horrible because all games under the Cookie Run label cater to people of any age rather than just one age group, so they have a larger audience of people who are able to buy NFTS, or are unaware of what NFTS do.

What can I do to stop them from doing NFTS?

If you’ve bought a subscription to any Cookie Run game pass, cancel it. Do not buy diamond / rainbow cube / coin / promotion packs ETC. Send them a ticket as to why you’re doin this, and note it’s because of their plans to produce NFTS that destroy the environment. If you so desire, temporarily delete the games from your devices. Let Devsisters know that what they’re doing is wrong so they diminish these plans entirely.

The backlash from their fanbase WILL or hopefully cause them to halt their plans.

An individual player won’t stop Devsisters from doing this, but if most of us bond together, we can.
