Colin Coventry, whom I first met in May 2016, has been exploring Smoo Cave for over 25 years. As an eccentric Fifer with a melancholic sarcasm and a stoic enthusiasm towards his craft, he is a very memorable character with good reason to believe he is digging towards a great revelation, driven by his own personal mantra, ‘Because it hasn’t happened does not mean it cannot be discovered’.

“What inspired you to start digging?”, I asked Colin when I returned to photograph him again several months later. Looking back onto the narrow entrance of the 17 metre long burrow he has endured the last three winters digging in search of an undiscovered cavern, he paused to wonder, inhaling a long draw from his cigarette before laughing in reply, “Well—I really just needed something to do whilst I waited for the pub to open”.
