anyway, the Emma Rios rapier match I was just rambling about:
(I was remembering the first bout - she pops him at about 00:39, then the next bout starts)
I forgot, she did dance around him for a bit, but it’s not jumpy or rushed.
She’s recognized that her opponent fights in an Italian kind of style, keeping his stance coiled and low so he can spring out like a scorpion sting - but he’s used to doing it in straight lines and the constant circular motion of destreza is really effective against that.
Rios is in complete control of this match. She strikes once.fuckin’ legend.

The use of swords and spears in battle requires much movement, in both attacks and defense. Oftentimes you can take the enemy completly by surprise by charging full speed ahead from a great distance, therefore learn to be accurate from not just your ideal position, but from anywhere.

Lecture: Fighting with the viking shield (by Roland Warzecha)
Roland Warzecha from Hammaborg lectures at Moesgård Museum about the biomechanics of medieval sword fighting and the use of the viking round shield. He demonstrates how to fight with the edge of the shield and how the viking shields boss may have acted as a sword catcher (and not as a weapon for punching).
The proper way to ending them rightly.
Many of you may know the meme that pommel is equal to a hand grenade, but the right wording is finish him quickly. Which is to throw your pommel as a distraction before you close in for the kill.

Qing White Banner Bannerman practicing Shuangjian Sino-Japanese War 1894. One of the things I like about period paintings like this is the dose of reality. This is how swordsmen of the Qing dynasty appeared. Not with the wild, colorful, “silky” outfits we see in wushu today, with dragons and sequins. Note also the unusual s shaped guards of his two jian, quite unusual for the period.

I’ve always found training with the two-handed Miaodao an excellent counter-point to my Jianfa practice. Miaodao work focuses on engaging with power supported by full steps. The Jian swordplay tends to be more like a fast chess games employing circular steal steps and quick half steps. Training in these two very different systems provides a wide understanding of tactics and sword strategy.
