Beyond the Darkness: current main wip. The files for Nightshade and my second prequel (simply calling it Prequel 2 for now) along with all my worldbuilding, brainstorming, and character sheets live in this folder.
Elf Story: The first wip I every seriously worked on, many years ago. I wrote about half of it, then went on a long writing hiatus. A lot of my other wip ideas through the years have just been cannibalizations of this story. I was really into Magical Realm stories back then. BtD is my first serious wip since
Merpeople and Space Angels: my newest wip idea, in the brainstorming phase but also very much on the backburner.
Guardian Soul: took an idea from Elf Story and tried to take it in a different direction. Basically an ordinary person inheriting the soul of an Ancient Magical Guardian, along with their knowledge and powers, feeling like the guardian is slowly taking over. Yes I love this concept, yes I went feral for Oscar/Ozpin in RWBY. I was writing Elf Story and Guardian Soul many many years before RWBY though.
Endless Summer: another wip idea that drew from Elf Story. I think I worked on this a bit a few years after abandoning Elf Story as an attempt to get back into it. A lot of the same concepts but from a different angle.

“I wish you knew you belonged with us,” Vein says to Umber’s hands, his ribs, his cheekbones.
“I wish you didn’t keep running away from me,” Vein says to Umber’s bike, his bruises, his scuffed shoes.
Umber never answers, never acknowledges the words. He stares a little harder at whatever task is occupying him and never pauses to catch his breath. The days roll past without differentiation, the nights tick by in many agonies of sleepless dreams. Every minute is a nightmare, and every dawn a disbelief.
“I wish you would come back to me,” Vein says to Umber’s door, his bed, his cigarettes. “I wish you would come back to yourself.”
The moments are nonexistent, the hours drag their feet through the days. There is no discovery, nor relief. There is only an echo, and it is left wanting.

I’ll pick out a few of my OC’s for this.
Lucy Tompson: At the time I created her I was really into Fairy Tail and thus her so I based her apperance of Lucy because I wanted to look like Lucy. According to wikipedia “with the meaning as of light” and nameberry says it means “light” so yeah. Tompson means son of Tom. I picked this so her surname wouldn’t be Swedish.
Natalie:Picked from the song “Natalie” by Jill Johnson. According to one source “The name Natalie comes from the Latin natale domini which means “birth of the Lord.””
Kyle:Picked because it sounded cool (Kyle XY) and I wanted to use it on a woman instead of a dude. “Kyle is a name with Scottish and Irish origins. It comes from the Gaelic word “caol” which means a narrow, a sound, or a strait.”
Loke:Picked out of spite because everyone made fun of me for spelling his name that way and insisted it was “Loki” when I simply spellt it the Swedish way. It’s the Norse Trickster God. It means fire/flame, close/complete (a task).
Alis: Taken from a book called “Alis med is” ~ “Alice with ice”, and when she introduced herself she’d go “Alis, Alis med is.” ~ “Name’s Alice, Alice with ice” which only makes sense in Swedish but I thought it was hilarious because she’s the patron of the Phoneix. “The name Alice is a girl’s name of German origin meaning "noble”.“
@sheabutterskyes tagged me to share the meanings of my OC’s names. I almost never choose names for any particular reason. They just arrive in my brain like the character is introducing themselves, so this is going to be a trip.

Gillen Kane Gillen: Servant of St John, variant on (Irish) Gillean Kane: Descendent of the war-like, anglicised form of (Irish, specifically Ulster which is where I’m from) Ó Catháin
I adore this because the Gospel of John (assuming we’re talking St John the Apostle/St John the Beloved here) is beautiful and makes me cry. Also, war-like. Holy shit. That fits so well. And I completely did not intend to give Gillen a name so completely connected to where I’m from.
Zola Kartheiser Zola: Calm (Xhosa) Kartheiser: Can’t find a meaning for this. I chose it because I needed a surname, Man Men was on in the background, and when I looked up Vincent Kartheiser was on screen.
Calm is a pretty appropriate meaning because she spends a lot of time calling Rafe on his shit and trying to get him to behave. She’s an extremely clever person who operates on a “you catch more flies with honey” level to get what she wants.
Okay enablers, it’s bad poetry time. Got a last line tag from @zonnemaagd and I’ve been working on this poem thing. I still feel like it needs some tweaks, and I feel pretty self-conscious about it, but also I want feedback so here you go.
I decided to go with prose poems rather than breaking the lines. These are also the new first lines of the book so figured it would be a good idea to sneak some themes in here too.
Moonlight pours around me as shadows hold my limbs and I search. What beyond the darkness waits? Light or night or choices I must make?
Slowly slipping through the shadows, mist and whispers brush my skin. Solid milky white and thick it swirls and dances, blocking sight of night and light alike.
Heavy. Weary. Searching endless. Pain erupts and burns. Lashing, grasping, thrashing, scratching. Hopeless struggle through an endless sea of white and gloom. Pulling, clinging, calling. Slowly sliding, sinking into soft silver-white caresses of endless empty loss and loneliness.

(as an aside, i am SHOOK at the unintentional meaning here, that the protagonist doesn’t speak in full dialogue until page 3. this whole piece is kind of about being silenced and fighting back. and that’s one HECK of a technical parallel. go me!)

Meili felt her throat tighten. “No,” she whispered, begging her father to deny what he was implying. “Tell me you didn’t.”

Liu Sang stares so hard at the end of the tunnel ahead of him that it seems to shrink away from him. A low rush fills the outside of his ears. His heartbeat is pounding harder and its beat is making his muscles ache. When he blinks, the glow from their flashlights change from a greenish hue to a warning red. But then he blinks again and the light is still green, dulland ordinary.
His lip catches between his teeth as he sucks in a breath. The rush is louder now, and is much more of an actual sound. He focuses in on the pulse and scope of it. It’s a real sound, not just his anxiety roaring at him. And its directly beneath his feet. The uneasiness doesn’t go away but the relief he feels at having his senses attacked by an actual sound and not merely his natural pessimism is at least in equal measure to the fear crawling up his skin.

Beomgyu has gotten used to hearing a lot in a silence, and then again in the silence between two people afraid of many things, most of which they couldn’t name. He hasn’t know Taehyun that long, but he thinks he can understand many of his silences now.
He thinks he hears Taehyun saying: stay alive for me,then.
“Yeah,” Beomgyu breathes out, something dislodging from his chest that he hadn’t known was stuck there. “Stick around. I want to hear your story, too.”
And there, unvoiced in the quiet, is: you stay alive,too.

the green lights of this town hurt my eyes. I don’t know why they shine so bright. when I look at the puddles they make on the ground beneath them, the effect is small and obscured easily by shadow. I place on shoe in the circle and I am showered in ambiguous glory.
the yellow lights on the train hurt my eyes. I don’t know why they pierce me so. round and round they flicker, one after the other, like they’re shaking hands and dying together. but they don’t go out, rather, they simply go on. I hold up a hand to block out the strain and I am left with a dismal reminder of rain.
the red lights on the water hurt my eyes. I don’t know why they glow so fiercely. even while the currents are so tumultuous and there is no business left for leftover lanterns, the lights bob atop the surface and radiate outward. I touch one of them and I am greeted with a chorus of flickersbefore they all disappear.
the silver lights of my palms hurt my eyes. I don’t know why I can’t shut them off. they don’t hurt me, they just slowly drain me dry and as I perch my tongue on my cracking lips I feel a sense of sorrow. I am only one source of light and after I am gone there will be no one left to think of stars as too bright for the night.

The silence stretched too long. I shifted from foot to foot, unable to see the Great Abyss’s – or Abby’s, if that’s what it wants to call itself - expression. I mean, it probably didn’t matter what it thought of my silly excuse of a name, or of me. The best I could hope for is that it’d find the taste of my soul satisfying enough to not destroy my world for a few more decades.

Apparently I stopped writing in the middle of a line so I’m doing last two lines.
She shrugged. “I don’t know.”
Three years was a long time. Enough time to get back to her life,
“Oh be serious, Christopher. We all know our dearest Val wouldn’t be caught dead in some musty old comic shop.” Maybe they could be caught dead somewhere else then. The conversation shifts as Marisa laughs, “He’s such a tease, Val.”
“Isn’t he just? Wicky, Darling, I’m thirsty. Should we get something to drink?”
I don’t drink, he almost says but they know that already so he holds his tongue and nods dutifully with a parting smile for Marisa. It’s almost a relief to get away from the incessant chatter. He could zone out right now, listen to the string quartet, and let himself drift.
The flavors were stronger than anything he’d had in weeks. Everything about it was perfect. Too perfect. He took a second bite and that’s when he heard them crunch a sharp pain in his mouth. He fished out a small piece of glass from his mouth. Covered in food and a little of his own blood. He slowly looked down at the plate. It looked completely normal, just like Villain;sitting across from him eating without a second glance.
A fist closed around his waist and he let it, barely breathing. He wouldn’t be able to get out of the box alone, couldn’t climb up the walls with no help. However, once he was up and out of it, he released a spell to heat the air around him quickly.
The man cursed as the small sprite in his hand suddenly burned him like a fiery coal - and dropped it.
The table top was farther than Nik had expected, and while he knew the impact would hurt, he didn’t expect it to knock the breath out of him.
Unfortunately I haven’t written since the last last line tag I’m gonna pick another WIP file which I have neglected for even longer.

Leon made a low noise, conveying agreement. “Our people learned much and quickly in the early days. Not only the language. Reading and writing, crafting and cooking. So much knowledge, not only from the humans. But imagine one of the explorers coming back, bringing you a recipe that requires something called butter, and you have no idea what that is.” Leon laughed. “Then you wait for a few months for the answer. More often than not, we didn’t wait. We tried our best, we failed and succeeded and tried again. Ask Lily, she’s older than me. When she was a sapling, our people barely knew what an oven was.”
“I’m not that much older than you,” Lily insisted.
Alec floated into an uneasy sleep, hugging a spare pillow to his chest and wishing he was in his own bed, snuggling with Dorian.

He wouldn’t have deemed it possible, but if anything, things had gotten worse after Jonah’s panic attack. He barely spoke. Didn’t eat unless forced to do so. Kept trembling even when he was just sitting on the couch, watching tv. And - the most remarkable change - he had become incredibly clingy.
“Hm.” His new owner said, looking down at Miles from where he wiggled in the cage. “I’ve already signed all the papers I need to. Could I take it home now?”

Then Apple scrambles across the floor, hugs Jimmy’s legs, and sobs harder. “I-I’m—I’m sor—” He chokes on his hot tears and buries his face in the soft fabric of Jimmy’s pants.
