Naming the Yugi Twins

It may be kinda a common question, but what are the twins named after, if they are named after something? We all know that AidaIro puts a lot of symbolism into naming their characters, so it’s worth a thought.

And with that, here’s my theory:

Amane and Tsukasa are named after Amaterasu and Tsukuyomi respectively.

Amaterasu is the Japanese goddess of the sun, while Tsukuyomi, her younger brother, is the god of the moon. Kinda parallels the Yugi twins too.

Okay, it seems pretty far-fetched other than the similarities between the first one or two syllables.

But there is some evidence.

In this picture, rather than the school emblem, Hanako and Tsukasa respectively have a sun and moon emblem on their hats.

It is also further accentuated by their contrasting colour palettes: A red-oriented, warm palette for Hanako, like daytime, and a blue-oriented, cool palette for Tsukasa, like nighttime. (Even in the canon manga, Hanako is often associated with red and Tsukasa with the colour purple.)

And during the Mitsuba arc, when Tsukasa explains his and Amane’s wish-granting roles in the Near and Far Shores, Tsukasa is shown with a moon motif and Amane with a sun motif.

Also, in Japanese folklore, when the creator god Izanagi came out of the underworld, he attempted to purify himself by washing out his eyes. Amaterasu was born when he washed his left eye, and Tsukuyomi when he washed out his right eye.

And where do we see the twins’ seals?

Amane’s is on his left cheek (under his left eye) and Tsukasa’s is on his right cheek (under his right eye)!

Another parallel is that both Hanako and Amaterasu are responsible for keeping balance and harmony; Hanako in Kamome Academy and Amaterasu in the earthly realm respectively.

Japanese lore also states that the two gods shared the sky until Tsukuyomi killed another goddess out of disgust, causing Amaterasu to label him an “evil god” and split away from him.

Could this also be foreshadowing to why the twins are so opposed to each other in terms of their motives? Or could it be hinting at why Amane killed his brother in the first place? It’s debatable but interesting to think about.

Well, that’s all I have for this theory! Feel free to add on more.

It could also be a sort of joke or reference as to why the initial rumor was that Hanako was a girl, given how the Amaterasu was female

I feel like this interaction with Nene 4 days before this conversation with Tsushigamori influenced his cryptic “I’m not going anywhere” comment. Also, this isn’t even the first time paradox Nene created. She went back to the festival, causing Amane to wish to see her again, creating this odd inevitable cycle of fate. It also makes me wonder what he remembers of his life and if he was waiting decades for her after his death.

I need answers. Like what is this toy and why is it important enough to keep appearing??
