Dark Girls on OWN. “You’re pretty for a dark girl”…Honestly, when people tell me that I feel like they’re saying your pretty for a dog. My mom always encouraged me to love all types of people no matter their culture, skin tone or shade and never made me feel like I was different. Growing up she gave me black dolls not because they were better but because I could relate to them. It is every parents responsibility to teach their child where their validation comes from. One’s validation shouldn’t come from a man, a friend, a teacher, the media, from society, or from other people’s standards in the world. My mother always taught me that my validation comes from GOD ALONE. If a parent makes their dark skinned child or any child feel like they are different and allow their children to look for worldly acceptance then they will raise a lost soul. How can people give societies standards so much power and allow something that can’t be controlled determine so much. I know this is not just an issue among Black people but an issue that affects people worldwide. So, I challenge all women of every culture to stop trying to change yourself to accommodate society, stop letting the media shape your morale, stop tolerating COLORISM, move past your insecurities and and focus on building your MIND and ways to change our world for the better. Beauty is a state of mind. Rise, Women, Rise!
