Todd chuckled again, like he had back in the garage, deep and lazy and guttural. “At first, that’s why I thought I was fighting. But it didn’t take long for me to realize I was fighting for you. You deserved another chance, babybat. You deserved to live, more than anything else. So just, be careful with life this time around. Our family needs you.”

Hi, please go read I Can Dish It Out, But I Can’t Take It by FallenPissyBird (or @jayredwing on tumblr) on AO3. More art shall come soon.

translation :

“It is one of the severest tests of friendship to tell your friend his faults. So to love a man that you cannot bear to see a stain upon him and to speak painful truth through loving words, that is friendship.” - Henry W. Beecher

source : Gyakuten Saiban Fanbook by MediaWorks, presumably 1st issue

heyo! a little bit of extra interesting info about this particular quote,

while it is true its Henry W. Beecher’s quote, the statement in this pageisactuallyareference to it and not an entirely direct word-per-word translation.

try translating each JP lines yourself as there’s actually some extra words put in there thatmay pique your interest hahaha.

i’ll edit the original post to signify this.

here’s the quote in text :

i notice this post got quite the attention so i’ll inform you of this again that the words above are notdirect translation of Beecher’s quote, but its paraphrasing it.

Here’s a translation to the words above in its entirety (and what they imply) :

“It is one of the severest tests of friendship to tell your friend their faults and shortcomings.

If you are annoyed with someone, or if they seem to have a problem with you and if you are angry at them, its easy to just walk up to them and give them a hard time.

But when you love your friend so much, you can’t bear seeing them in pain, you tell them painful truth through loving words. That is what true friendship is all about.

However, only a few people are lucky enough to have such a friend. Our enemies would think that its okay for us to remain the same,

While they’d point their swords at our backs”

as you can see, some of the lines were not in the original Henry W. Beecher’s quote,

however it actually gave the quote thats paraphrased even more depth as it gives the audience the perspective of Edgeworth’s position and Phoenix’s care for him.

how Edgeworth was lucky to have Phoenix as his friend, who cares for him so much he’d rather confront him with painful truths directly about his errors through‘loving words’ instead of just letting Edgeworth succumb to the dark of his Demon Prosecutor ways that they both know would eventually hurt Edgeworth himself in the end.
