On my most recent reread of Neverwhere, I realized how fucking funny this dynamic was.  Marquis went from ‘I don’t care about this bozo, he’ll probably die soon anyways’ to die-hard Richard apologist/will threaten and/or kill any perceived Richard-threats.  it’s kind of like the dad who says he doesn’t want a family pet, but when the family gets a pet, the dad is obsessed with the pet
