There was a year when Ryan Gosling was everywhere. Then, he sort of wasn’t. He took a break to make his own film and to have some genetically blessed children with Eva Mendes. If nothing else, the Nice Guys served as a two hour reminder of just how much I’ve missed him.

After rising to fame in The Notebook (a hideous film) it would’ve been easy to dismiss him as plithy, nothingy romantic lead with a soppy character and a face that reaches Helen of Troy levels of ‘Holy shit that’s nice’.  But he’s made some interesting career choices since then, earning some genuine indie cred and an Oscar nomination along the way. Here, he gets to showcase a side of himself we haven’t fully seen before. Did we know Ryan Gosling is…funny?

Maybe we did, maybe we didn’t. Either way, he is super funny and so is The Nice Guys.  The two leads have great chemistry and they provide many laugh out loud moments.

I’m not really sure how this would fare as a crime drama in its own right because that frankly ain’t my genre and I like to stick in my lane (my lane generally being quiet indie, bloody horror and anything where I get to gaze lovingly at chaps with nice arms) but as a comedy it really works. Well, it made me laugh a lot anyway, even I didn’t fully understand/can’t really remember the plotline.

☆☆☆.5
