I’m going to start work of a selection on new descaled specimens for my first insect-display update of 2020! Which species would you like to see featured?
.
Descaling is a technique where the butterfly’s scales are carefully removed to reveal the delicate and sheer wing membrane! Entomologist sometimes use this technique to study the anatomy of a Lepidoptera wing and classify species!
.
Because of all the years I have spent researching and perfecting this technique it is one of the few ‘trade secrets’ I do not share. If you’re interested in learning how to pin and mount insects, please visit my website to find my how-to guides.
.
Visit my webpage TheButterflyBabe.com or click the link in my bio to view all of my available art.
.
Use the hashtag #THEBUTTERFLYBABE for a chance to have your insect photographs featured on my page!
.
All the species that I use are collected from sanctuaries across the US, who educate people about the importance of these creatures to our world, after they have passed away.

The honey bee was one of the first domesticated insects and it is the only insect that produces food

The honey bee was one of the first domesticated insects and it is the only insect that produces food eaten by man.
.
Honey bees are vital pollinators; Because of its wide cultivation, this species is the single most important pollinator for agriculture, globally.
.
The European Honey Bee (Apis mellifera) is not native to the Americas — only arriving, aboard European ships, around 1622.
.
Honey bees have 6 legs, 2 compound eyes made up of thousands of tiny lenses (one on each side of the head), 3 simple eyes on the top of the head, 2 pairs of wings, a nectar pouch, and a stomach.
.
Honey bees have 170 odorant receptors. Their sense of smell is so precise that they can differentiate hundreds of different floral varieties and tell whether a flower carried pollen or nectar from metres away.
.
The honey bee’s wings stroke incredibly fast, about 200 beats per second, creating their famous, distinctive buzz. A honey bee can fly for up to six miles, and as fast as 15 miles per hour.
.
The average worker bee produces about 1/12th teaspoon of honey in her lifetime.
.
A hive of bees will fly 90,000 miles, the equivalent of three orbits around the earth to collect 1 kg of honey.
.
It takes one ounce of honey to fuel a bee’s flight around the world.
.
A honey bee visits 50 to 100 flowers during a collection trip.
.
While honeybees are awesome, let’s remember that they are not the only bees that need protecting! There are thousands of other bee species that are vital to our ecosystems, many of which specialize in pollinating native flora that cannot otherwise be pollinated by any other bee species.
.
The specimens used in my work were collected from a beekeeper after they’ve passed away. The bees push their dead out of the hive and they are collected so I can use them for my art.

One of my favorite parts of my job is getting to raise such beautiful species and watching them through their whole lifecycle. Scroll through this post to view some of the special moments I’ve captured while raising Luna Moths.
.
New shadow frame and glass dome insect displays are available in shop now.
.
The American Luna Moth has no mouth and does not eat or drink. Only living for one week as an adult, their only purpose is to mate and produce the next generation. There has been concern that light pollution from man-made sources, like street lights, may deter silk moths from mating. Luna moths, once very common, are now being threatened in some areas due to habitat loss.
.
A week might seem like a very short time for us. But, it is a lifetime for these moths. They put all of their energy into transforming from a caterpillar to a moth, flying to find a mate and then producing the next generation! They live a very productive and prosperous adult life.
