manjiro smiled, but even as he did, ken could see his mouth trembling as it was forced into a line and when manjiro spoke, he began to wish he hadn’t.

“smile for me one last time, kenchin.”

the wobbling of manjiro’s voice made ken’s resolve falter, but there was no going back now.

“smile with me, mikey.” ken found himself demanding. “it’s not fair if I’m alone.”

manjiro’s lips trembled again as he opened his mouth slowly, broken voice agreeing to ken’s terms.

“okay.”

“on the count of three then,”

“okay.”

ken and manjiro count down (until the ends of their lives).

“one,”

“two,”

they lock eyes and declare together, “three.”

ken was happy to make out manjiro’s smile as his life flashed before his eyes and his lips stretched wider. at least he got the one thing he’s wished for so long since.

they smiled together again.

“three.”
