You knew the second you entered The Hard Deck that this had been a mistake. Being this close to the airbase, it wasn’t surprising that for every three people in the room, two of them were in uniform. And you had had enough experience with these kinds of places to know nothing good came of hanging around one by yourself. However, you were here for a reason, so after quickly smoothing out your sundress, you hurried over to the bar.
Taking a seat on one of the stools, you ordered a beer from the kind bartender who gave you a sweet smile as she handed it to you. But just as you raised the bottle to your lips, someone leaned heavily against the bar top next to you. Glancing out of the corner of your eye, you saw a handsome blond man with an arrogant smile staring back at you and you internally groaned. While you had expected this, it would have been nice if you had been able to at least take a single sip of your drink first.
The man slid a little closer as he asked, “So, what’s a pretty little thing like you doing all alone in a place like this?”
Jake paced back and forth in the control room as he frantically waited to hear your voice over the coms. He was supposed to be out there with you. He was supposed to be your wingman. But all because of a faulty compressor, he had been forced to return to the aircraft carrier almost immediately after take-off.
Ever since the two of you had met when you had been called back to Top Gun for a special mission, you had been close friends and trusted wingmen. When that mission was over, you both had been overjoyed to learn you had been reassigned to the same unit and your partnership could continue. And every mission you had flown together since had gone perfectly. Up until now and all because of that stupid compressor!
Jake scrubbed his hand across his face as he glanced over at the monitor. You were supposed to go dark as part of the mission, but not for this long. According to the plan, they should have reestablished radio contact 15 minutes ago. But there was only silence. And Jake didn’t know how much more of it he could take.
Suddenly, the comms crackled to life. “Control, this is Clover. Mission was a success, and I am on my way home.” A cheer went up through the room but as much as the sound of your voice sent relief flooding through Jake’s system, he could tell something was wrong. Your voice was breathy and there was a jittery, tense quality to your words.
Being my whump queen, I expected the worst. And as it progressed, I gotta admit you had me at the edge of my seat, muttering a soft ‘please… don’t’..
But oh God, that ending
“Yeah. I wasn’t there for you today, but I’m never leaving my wingman to fly solo again. I swear.” I’m swooning hard over here! ❤️
I mean, I do enjoy a cocky Hangman, but this softer side to him is just
I like to keep people on their toes! I am not above killing the reader-insert or any character, so you never know what you’re gonna get! But I’m not always heartless!
I also love cocky Hangman, but I do think he would be sweeter with someone he really cared about. Especially in a situation like this. I’m glad you liked it!

One minute everything is peaceful and calm, and then the next minute chaos erupts. Suddenly, the entire group of Top Gun trainees in the corner of the bar all jump to their feet. From behind the bar, you don’t have a clear view of what is going on, but you can hear shouting and see limbs flailing about as everyone scrambles to stop whatever is happening. You quickly rush over to the scene of the fight but there is so much commotion, you can’t see what is going on in the middle.
Remembering what Penny told you to do when these rare instances occurred, you ran back to the bar and grabbed the military-style whistle from the hook under the register. Hurrying back to the fray once more, you get as close as you can and then blow the whistle as loudly as possible.
A shrill, high-pitched screech fills the bar and all the trainees instantly stop their fighting to cover their ears. You hold the note for as long as you can and then an eerie silence falls across the bar. Taking a deep breath, you shout, “I don’t care who started it, I don’t care who was involved. You know the rules. You have fifteen minutes to collect your things and pay your tabs, then I want all of you out!”
The trainees all grumble under their breath and shoot you dirty glances, but you know they all feared what Penny might do to their bar tabs if word got back to her that they disrespected you. So, you motion to Jimmy, who had just come out of the back, to go behind the bar and ring everyone out for the night. Once he nods, you turn back to the few men still picking themselves up off the ground.

im going to go to bed, but because i posted my first top gun sm*t right now i just want to say something. i had a mutual on twitter (who i blocked for this reason) who was going out of their way to screenshot and shame people for writing thirst posts about top gun on here, and to mock people for writing smut (specifically shaming one about hangman, saying they were appalled by… she/her pronouns???) well anyway, if that person sees this on here i just want to say how hard it is to be confident enough to post fanfiction, let alone sm*t, and if you don’t like it you can scroll on by.
