Matanuska Glacier has some of the most incredible surface hoar crystals growing in their ice caves right now. Had fun exploring it again, a couple weeks ago with my buddy @jussiruottinenphotography, as we focused on these textures for a couple hours.
“Surface hoar crystals are large ice crystals that form from water vapor in an above freezing atmosphere coming in contact with a solid surface that is below freezing resulting in a phase change from water vapor to ice.” - @matanuskaglacier
The view looking down Matanuska Glacier. Was lucky the clouds decided clear up just enough to show the peaks. The difference between the telephoto lens vs the wider angle is pretty cool too.
Swipe right to see the wide and where @lisabao and I camped.
Exploring the ice “Arch” with @jenleahy. This incredible feature is part of @matanuskaglacier. Hopefully we can move towards better environmental habits so these incredible places can be with us for many many years to come.
I have probably been to @matanuskaglacier a dozen or so times, but all during summer months. Finally getting out here in winter was definitely a surprise. The features you are able to explore are beyond incredible and would be un-assessable in summer. I’ll be sharing more shots from this day soon. But here is one of my many favorites to get the ball rolling.
Thanks @jenleahy for hanging out and showing me around and of course the awesome crew at @matanuskaglacier for accommodating us.
Thought I’d share one more from yesterday evening. The colors were just too great not to share. It’s not even the sunset, it’s the sky opposite the setting sun. . Also, anyone have the experience when choosing a photo in Instagram, upon selecting it, when it moves to the edit phase, you can watch it visibly change brightness and saturation. It dulls considerably. Maybe I need to upload a bigger/smaller file?
