To dispel the gloom and separation anxiety from dressing well, today I’m beginning a series of indefinite length celebrating the elements of style, offering historical perspective where I can.
Today’s subject is the unsung work horse of the modern palate: the gray trouser (often flannel).
Summoned into existence as a garment separate by (who else) the Price of Wales in around 1920, solid gray trousers are perhaps the most versatile single garment one can own. They pair with everything except perhaps the identical shade (and that isn’t the matching suit jacket), making them an ideal neutral to build an aesthetic rig. But don’t mistake them for simplicity: they can be pleated or flat front, high or low waisted, button or zip fly, cuffed or … well, let’s not consider the horror of the alternative.
A really good pair of gray trou should be treasured and well kept. Cleaned periodically but not too often. And cared for when pressed.
