Signups for the 2022 Tolkien Reverse Summer Bang are now open!

For those who don’t know already, this is a Tolkien-fandom-wide event celebrating the talent of our fanwork creators. Participating artists create a piece of art to be claimed by one of our signed up authors. Authors will then write a 5k word fic based on the art they chose.

  • All sign up forms are available here!
  • As well as signing up as an authorand/orartist, you can sign up as a beta, cheerleader, pinch hitter, or treat maker.
  • Explanations of what all of these mean can be found in the relevant section of our FAQ.  Signups for these roles will not close and will get you access to the gallery; however, you must be signed up as an author to claim.
  • Want to suggest a prompt to our artists? Our suggestions formwill be open until May 15th.
  • Want to see what others have already suggested and get hyped with us? Check out our handy spreadsheet.
  • Questions? Come and visit our website, which has our FAQs and timeline all set out.
  • Please be sure to familiarise yourself with the rules before signing up :)

We are open to all characters, genres and ratings, and all canons that fall under the Tolkien fandom umbrella. This includes movieverse (i.e. the LOTR and Hobbit trilogies), lesser known works by Tolkien (such as The Father Christmas Letters), and/or other works with a clear link to his life or creative output (for example, Tolkien’s translations and academic texts, the 2019 Tolkien biopic, fan-made films like Born of Hope, and game canons such as The Lord of the Rings Online). Crossovers between two or more Tolkien canons are permitted.

We hope you’re as excited as we are! We can’t wait to see what you make.

PS - for many of the mod team, April 15th and 18th are public holidays.  As such, confirmation emails may be going out more slowly than usual.  If you haven’t received confirmation of your sign up within 72 hours, feel free to send us an Ask or a follow-up email.

Completely and Utterly Unofficial Non Affiliated with TRSB Art Squee Voice Chat Event on AoA Discord - 5/21 @ 5pm UTC

First, a little history – for the past three years, I had a little pre-claims chat party, and gather people to be on Discord to talk about the TRSB art before claims. Last year, the group got really big, and it took almost 8 hours to get through the art. This year, TRSB has their own Discord. So it didn’t make sense to do the exact thing the mods were doing, plus, it just got too big for one unaffiliated person to do. But, I still like the mood of the past three years, so I’m trying this out this year, and if you read this far, you’re invited. (And even if you didn’t read this far, you’re still invited, you just won’t know that I guess.) So, link and details…

Hang out in voice chat and squee over the TRSB art (note: in order to see said art, one will need to either have participated as an artist or have signed up as an author - you can do so and get details over at the TRSB website - https://tolkienrsb.wordpress.com/)

HOWEVER, a disclaimer: The mods have asked that I clearly state and let everyone know that this server, me included, are ZERO PERCENT affiliated with TRSB and this is a totally independent event that is totally unofficial and TRSB has NOT approved of this event and has their own events, but this is the one that’s happening in an independent art discord server I run, in a completely unofficial manner. It’s so unofficial, I didn’t even approve myself to run this event.

Chat is scheduled for 5/21 at 5pm UTC to have given everyone a little time to have absorbed the art in advance. Event will run approximately two hours.

(There is an official event on the official TRSB discord four hours prior; in the event their event is still running at the time the unofficial event on Artists of Arda is supposed to start, the AoA event will be delayed until after the official event ends.)

Just about 90 minutes out from this - should be a nice chill chat, and I am broadcasting from the Tears Unnumbered Pub instead of my home office.

Pros: No random parrot noises; I’m in a room full of booze.

Cons: Evil cat will try to steal my mouse constantly; I’m in a room full of booze.

TRSB22: Post Claims Housekeeping

Hello, TRSB-ers!

Thank you again to everyone who has helped all the artworks find a loving home; we really appreciate it.

Over the next 24 hours or so, we will go through the gallery and remove the stamps from the art so that potential treat makers can see them better.  Remember, if you’re making a treat and you’d like to know whose art it is so you can gift your fanwork to them, you can email the mods for their username.  (Just keep it under your hat until reveals!)

Check in #1 is tomorrow, so for those involved in a full collab, please don’t forget to send us an email with the art slide number, your username (& your partner’s), confirmation that contact has been made, and whether things are going OK.  Check ins are mandatory and it would be amazing if we could get a 100% check in rate on time this year; it makes our lives so much easier!

Remember that sign ups for the following roles are open all summer:

  • Beta
  • Cheerleader
  • Pinch hitter
  • Treat maker

The sign up forms are linked here.

We won’t be checking the forms as often as we were during artist or writer sign ups, so if you don’t receive a confirmation email from us within 48 hours of signing up, please feel free to drop us an email or send us an Ask as a reminder.

That’s all for now; happy creating!

PSA: Art Submissions - Relationships

Hi folks,

Couple of things to keep in mind, please, if you’re submitting art with a significant focus on relationships.  (These are stated in our FAQ, but given some of the comms we’ve had recently, it seems a general post is needed!)

- “Character A/Character B” denotes a romantic &/or sexual relationship, while “Character A & Character B” denotes a gen relationship, such as parent and child, or a pair or group of friends.

- You may request groups of 3+ characters, either as a poly ship, a larger gen group, or a combination (e.g. “Character A/Character B & Character C”).

The next point is not specifically covered in our FAQ, but we are going to look at adding something around this for next year:

- If you would like a relationship that does not sit neatly in one of these boxes, you may, if you wish, use “Character A + Character B” or “Character A and Character B”, but please explain the type of relationship that you envisage in your additional notes, as these designations are not as widely understood as “/” or “&” and we would not like anyone to be disappointed by their author’s interpretation.

If anyone reads this and thinks “oops I need to change my slide”, please email the mods and we will sort it out.

CALLING ALL TOLKIEN FAN ARTISTS!

There are just 10 days left to sign up for 2022’s Tolkien Reverse Summer Bang - the form will be open until 23.59 CET on 8 May.  We’ve got some great submissions already but it would be wonderful if more of you could join us - the more artwork, the better!

I’d like to take part but I’ll never get anything finished in 10 days…

It doesn’t have to be finished - art drafts are due at 23.59 CET on 15 May, and the draft just needs to give a good idea of what the final piece will look like.  Line art which will have colour added later is fine, or you could submit a concept drawing of something that you will work on through the summer - a costume or an embroidery piece, for example.  If in doubt, contact the mods; we will be as accommodating as we can.

Unless you decide that you want to be completely hands off in your partnership with your author, you have until 7th August to finish your art.

I’m not sure my art is eligible.

It probably is!  We only turn down art for the following reasons:

1) It is so incomplete that you can’t get any idea what the finished piece will be like (e.g. it’s at the lines and blobs stage - a nice sketch, for example, would be fine, or a manip that’s still a little rough at the edges).

2) It doesn’t demonstrate sufficient original input (e.g. it’s a screenshot from a film or game with no transformative elements applied).

3) The piece(s) submitted have previously been published elsewhere (e.g. they’re already on DeviantArt).

We accept all kinds of artworks.  In the past we’ve had sculpture, crafts, drawings, paintings, comic strips, moodboards, edits, digital manipulations, calligraphy, collage, cosplay and print block cutting.  It would be great to broaden that out even further.  (Pyrography? Video?  Bookbinding? Board game design?!?)

I’ve never done anything like this before! / I’m usually a writer and I’ve never published my art!  I’m nervous!

You’re not on your own - every year we have a lot of first timers as well as plenty of experienced participants.  The mods will happily answer any questions you have; ourFAQsection gives a fairly comprehensive run-down of the event, but if something isn’t clear, please just ask!

What if nobody wants to claim my art?

We cannot absolutely promise that every artwork will find a loving home with one of our authors, but rest assured that demand on claims night is always extremely high - and it isn’t always the obvious characters and pairings that get snapped up first…

(We also have an excellent team of pinch hitters and treat makers, and will do our very best to find someone to write for your creative efforts.)

I’ve only seen the films / I’ve only read The Lord of the Rings / I’m new to the fandom, but everybody is talking about obscure academic papers and people whose names start with Fin.  Help!!!

We have artists and writers of all experience levels taking part in this event, from complete beginners through to professionals.  Length of time in fandom and knowledge of different canons also varies, and we will be glad to have you whether you are a full-time Tolkien scholar or you fell in love with the films last weekend.

There is no gate-keeping in this event and no expectation that you are familiar with every Tolkien text or every piece of media.  All we ask is that you are clear in your submission which canon(s) your art is based on.  Art and fic based solely on the films or on a video game canon is very welcome in the event - in fact, we always like to see a mixture!

Do I have to help the author with the story?  I don’t think I can do that!

That’s OK!  We have a range of collaboration levels that you select from when you submit your art, including low-commitment options (though we do ask that you are responsive to your author and reply to any questions within 48 hours, unless you have told them in advance that you’re going to be unavailable for a period of time). See the FAQs for more detail.

How many pieces can I submit?

Up to two pieces, for claiming by two separate authors.

OK, I’m in.  What next?

The artist signup form is over here - once we have your signup, we will send you a confirmation email welcoming you to the event (this can take up to 48 hours depending on mod availability).  We can’t wait to see your beautiful creations!

One week left to sign up as an artist!

We would love you to come and join our summer adventure!  If you don’t have time this year or you’ve already signed up, then please help us spread the word to your fellow fan artists.

(Don’t forget, art drafts aren’t due until the 15th, and they can be VERY draft at this stage, so don’t panic if you think you won’t be finished by then!)

Artist sign ups close on 8th May - that’s in FIVE DAYS!  Don’t miss out!

We just received an Ask about whether betas can choose which stories/authors they work with in the event.  It was a signed in Ask so it’s been answered privately, but pasting some of the contents here in case it’s useful to others…

“The beta sign up form will ask you a) which types of feedback you are willing to give [SPAG, canon compliance, sensitivity read, etc.], and b) anything you are NOT willing to read [e.g. “no romance”, “nothing Silmarillion-based” “nothing rated M or above” and so on].

When the mods receive a request for a beta read, we will ask the author for a brief summary of their story, the expected rating, and any warnings/important content tags.  We will email this info to signed up betas who look like they could be a good fit; the betas can then choose to respond or not, depending on their current commitments and whether they are comfortable with the outlined contents of the fic.”

Cheerleading and pinch hitting work very similarly.  At sign ups, potential cheerleaders and hitters are asked to give us an idea of the kind of content they are comfortable with, and will not receive requests that clash with their “no thank you” lists.  The only exception to this might be if we have a flood of requests for help (can happen towards the end of the event in particular!!) in which case we would just collate all open requests for, say, cheerleading support, email to the signed up cheerleaders, and ask them to volunteer for the ones that catch their fancy.

Hope this all makes sense, but as always, the mods are happy to answer any questions.

TRSB22 Sign Ups - Housekeeping

Dearest, loveliest TRSB-ers,

We like to think we don’t have unduly stringent requirements for signing up to the event.  However, we do need you to provide an email address that actually belongs to you - not to your friend, your beta, your auntie, your dog, or Mrs. Tiggywinkle down the road.

All critical mod comms such as check in reminders, claims instructions, etc. are communicated via email.  “I didn’t see it because my friend didn’t tell me about it” is not an excuse for missing a check in or failing to get in touch with your partner.

If you don’t want to use an email with your real name in it, that’s perfectly fine.  It takes two minutes and costs nothing to make a secondary account using a fandom pseudonym.  Usually you will be able to link it to your primary account for ease of monitoring.

If it comes to our attention that someone has signed up with a fake email address or with an address that does not belong to them, we will not attempt to track that individual down and contact them directly via another platform; we will simply delete their sign up.

Lots of love,

Mary The TRSB Mod Team

tolkienrsb:

Attention, Tolkien Fans!

Feeling the Monday blues?  Need something to look forward to?  Why not sign up for the Tolkien Reverse Summer Bang?

This is a Tolkien-fandom-wide event in which participating artists create a piece of art to be claimed by one of our signed up authors.

Don’t worry if you’re new to the fandom, or you aren’t super-experienced as an artist/writer, or you haven’t read everything Tolkien ever wrote.  We have artists and writers of all experience levels taking part in this event, from complete beginners through to professionals.  Length of time in fandom and knowledge of different canons also varies.  As mods we aim to keep conversations positive and encouraging; we do not gate-keep here.

If you’re worried that your particular fandom niche might be under-represented, then spread the word to your fellow creators, and use the suggestions spreadsheet to make the case for your favourite canons/ships/characters.

We hope to see you on the sign up list soon!
