#tw parent mention

LIVE

Can cishet people stop telling LGBTQ+ people that they’re lucky to have basic support and acceptance? I shouldn’t be considered lucky because my parents didn’t kick me out when I came out. I’m not lucky to have parents that have “let” me transition. I’m not lucky that my friends aren’t transphobic or homophobic.

Telling people they’re lucky for having bare minimum support makes it seem like where society is right now is fine and that we don’t have to improve. It’s like saying that having good support shouldn’t be a norm or bare minimum. It’s definitely very gas lighty.

If you’re an ally and you see this, correct yourself and move on. I understand why this happens, just don’t say it again.
