POV: we’re on a date and you ask me about Anglo-Saxon bed burials

Everyone in the notes asking for an explanation, the gist of an Anglo-Saxon bed burial were that sometimes people were buried lying in a bed. Almost always young women of higher social status, indicated by their grave goods. Some of them are thought to be abbesses because of the religious symbols they were found with. Buried, in an entire bed. Only 12 examples have been found in Britain. They date from the 7th century.

I don’t know why I find it so oddly comforting and so mind blowing. It’s theorized some of these women may have been displayed in their beds so that the community could pay respects before their burials. Sleep as a metaphor for death, a way of humanity coming to grips with its finality, is a sobering part of the human condition that transcends time.

I don’t have a flag to bare or a name to call my own I’ve concluded. Depersonalization has won.
