On August 3, 1958, the submarine USS Nautilus successfully completes “Operation Sunshine,” accomplishing the “impossible” - crossing the North Pole by ship. The submarine left from Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, on July 23, 1958, and reached the geographic North Pole in only a couple of weeks, at 11:15 pm. USS Nautilus was the world’s first nuclear-powered submarine.
