Photographer caption: "I can cry in front of them, I can tell them my secrets. I buy them things and they calm me down. I just feel comfortable around them,” says twenty-six year old Lisa Schalm as she poses for a portrait inside of her bedroom in Brockport, N.Y., on Oct. 11, 2017. Lisa suffers from depression, anxiety and borderline personality disorder and said that these reborn dolls are the only solution to help calm her symptoms. A reborn doll is a manufactured skin doll that has been transformed by an artist to resemble a human infant with as much realism as possible.”

During the production of the 1953 film Peter Pan, Walt Disney shares a laugh with three children, performing as live-action reference models dressed as, from left to right, Wendy, Michael, and John Darling. Walt Disney’s animators would famously use live-action models as references for drawings and animations to create realistic movement, scale, and facial expressions. In addition to Peter Pan, live-action models were also used in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937), Alice in Wonderland (1951), Pinocchio (1940),andSleeping Beauty (1959).

Our Walt Disney doc airs September 14 and 15. Check out our Walt Disney gallery for more Walt Disney images!

The Spirit of St Louis was a custom-built Ryan aircraft flown by Charles Lindbergh on May 20-21, 1927 on the first non-stop flight from New York to Paris. Lindbergh won the $25,000 Orteig Prize for the 33 ½ hour trip.

Nine St. Louis men financed Charles Lindbergh’s designs for a suitable plane to fly non-stop across the Atlantic Ocean from New York to Paris. Lindbergh tested the aircraft on May 10-11, 1927, when he flew the plane across the United States, from San Diego to New York City (stopping overnight in St. Louis).

President and Mrs. Ford began their 1975 ten-day visit of Eastern Europe in Germany. President and Mrs. Walter Scheel of Germany greeted them at the Villa Hammerschmidt on July 27, 1975, and Mrs. Scheel presented this gift to the Fords.

This white china plate features gold etched edges and open lattice work around the rim. The center of the plate displays a hand-painted fruit design with four smaller fruits surrounding it. This elegant gift is housed in its original box.

While Betty Ford utilized her time as First Lady to fight for women’s equality and the passage of the Equal Rights Amendment, German First Lady Mildred Scheel used her public role to advocate the fight on cancer. She raised awareness on different types of cancers, collected donations, and created the German Cancer Aid. Long-time friend Andy Warhol even created one of his signature silk-screen portraits of her to raise funds for her organization. Both women went above and beyond in their roles as First Ladies and made lasting public health and social impacts on their countries.

Pictured: The 1892 National Prohibition Convention

In 1919, the 18th amendment was ratified, prohibiting the transportation and sale of alcohol in the United States. While prohibitionists (known as “dries”) applauded its ratification, others (known as “wets”) were not as pleased. The 21st amendment, ratified in 1933, would repeal it.

Thanks to the repeal of the 21st amendment, our intern Maria, who regularly updates our Tumblr page, can celebrate her 21st birthday in style. Happy birthday to her!

Walt Disney by the Decade Challenge: The 1960s (7/7)

In the 1960s, Walt Disney imagined a sort of utopian community for people to live in, one that drastically differed from the dirty, crime-ridden cities that were sprinkled across the U.S. He called this community EPCOT (Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow). In the picture above, Walt Disney points to his initial plans for EPCOT in a short film that promoted his new idea.

Walt Disney died on December 15, 1966, only a couple of months after this photograph was taken.
