Space legend. Cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova became the first woman in space when she flew Vostok 6 in June 1963. The solo flight orbited Earth 48 times over a 2-day, 23 hour mission. She was selected from 400 applicants & it was her only spaceflight. She is the only woman ever to fly a solo space mission & in 2013 offered to go on a 1-way trip to Mars if the opportunity popped up. She flew at the age of 25 & remains the youngest woman to have flown in space.

Happy birthday to Valentina Tereshkova, the first woman to have flown in space. Tereshkova’s first mission, out of a total of 48 in orbit throughout her career, was on Vostok 6 on June 16th, 1963.

50 years ago Valentina Tereshkova became the first woman in space. Initially both Vostok 5 and 6, which flew at the same time, would be piloted by women. Tereshkova would pilot Vostok 5 and Valentina Ponomaryova Vostok 6. However, due to changes in the Sovjet Spaceflight program, Vostok 5 was flown by Bykovsky and Vostok 6 by Tereshkova. She would remain the only woman to have been in orbit for another 19 years.
