Here’s a sneak peak of the new interior. There’s still so much to do, including the underfloor storage compartment/new water tank (which means I can’t really finalise anything). The bench seat is now full width with a ‘snug’ area, and the westy table is not finalised just yet. This weekend I’m hoping to empty/repack the van, so once everything’s in place I’ll share some detailed photos. Just a little Friday night update. #vanbuild

A misty day in the mountains. Excited to put some big miles on my @thevwenginecompany rebuilt engine. The quality of service I’ve received from the team has been exemplary, I can’t recommend them enough. #vanbuild

Stages 1,2,3 of the Syncro build. Well. Broadly speaking. Its actually been years of small steps (many of which are documented on my website). I have to admit since the end of 2019 its been a real slog keeping positive about the van. I’m sure anyone with an old VW, or any old van, especially overlanders, will understand how incredibly brutal it can get. Its forever two steps forwards, one step back, and the cost to do things properly is just astronomical. That said. I love my van. The blood, sweat and tears further cement that bond, and I’m excited to push us both much harder/further moving forwards. The new windows were fitted this weekend, resealed the roof and getting closer to figuring out this annoyingly vibration (which I think is suspension related now - hoping new set-up will eradicate that). Watching as restrictions relax, will see how things unfold but I hope to get back on the road in some capacity by summertime. #vanbuild

Syncro should be back from its service tomorrow, which means I can finally refit the new windows and spend a little more time on the interior (which can only go so far because I want underslung storage & a new stainless water tank…but that’s gonna wait). I’ve been toying with different tires since they need changing, but sticking with the BFGoodrich ATs after speaking to other owners. Long story short, if the UK restrictions continue to ease as planned, if it’s safe/responsible, I may just be back on the road this year. Maybe. I’m trying not to get my hopes up, but nice to get the van all set either way #vanbuild

A little update on the van and my plans. The leaking roof has been a long hard battle, anyone who has suffered leaking in a live-in vehicle will know it’s just chaos. All my possessions were getting soaked, water pooling in cupboards, mould, damaging electrics. In the end the van was dry stored, everything was done from scratch and I now have a completely water tight van . In the meantime I’ve updated the interior electrics, integrated my @goalzero lithium set up, figured out the pesky noise/vibration I’ve had for months (ended up being the custom underslung protection bars touching the exhaust when the engine was under load), and all-in-all I’m ready to explore. However, with @bamberlin surprising me with flights I figured I’d hold out until her arrival for a big road trip, and in the meantime dial everything in locally. Definitely itching to get back on the road. Fingers crossed the UK stays on track . #vanbuild

#tbt to sub zero vanlife. I remember wincing when I spoke to Eberspacher about the cost of buying/fitting one of their heaters. Arriving in the Arctic Circle I realised it was the bargain of the century. I didn’t run the heater during the night, but it made days spent in the van comfortable, and getting out of bed in the mornings possible . #vanbuild

Finally putting in an order for a new set of @bfgoodrichtires ATs. I may also refurb my Mefro steel wheels as they’re looking a little tired (just can’t decide whether to go silver or black ). It’s kinda funny, on the one hand I resent the van for costing so much this year to get right, but on the other it’s nice to have a project so I don’t go completely mad . At present the Syncro’s a bloody expensive ornament, I hope this year I can stretch its legs. #vanbuild
