Vans Pool Party 2019

The force was with everyone last Saturday, May 4th at the Vans Skate Park in Orange, CA for the 15th annual Vans Pool Party inside the legendary Combi bowl. Last year’s winner Tom Schaar was awarded a ticket straight to the Pro finals and stomped a flawless run right out of the gate securing him the top of the podium and completing a three-peat victory. In the Masters Division it was an Andy vs Rune showdown in the final heat with Andy pulling ahead with a signature technical run. Everyone’s favorite division, the Legends, did not disappoint with Steve Caballero nailing elguarials and his signature caballerials during his run but it was the speed and flow of fellow Bones Brigader Lance Mountain who took home the gold with flawless inverts and flowing through the entire Combi. To re-watch the entire live stream of the 2019 Vans Pool Party head on over to vans.com/poolparty.

The DIY park building revolution altered the course of skateboarding forever, showing that anything is possible when skaters unite and take over. For today’s Letters episode Jeff Grosso pays respects to 5 favorite DIY parks, speaking to the main players about how they got them going and what it takes to keep them standing. As Peter Hewitt says, Burnside and the renegade spots and parks that came after are where skaters started maximizing their build space, tightly linking every part of the park together as opposed to prior designs of the ‘70s and ‘80s. These DIY parks are what sparked the Vans Park Series, which would not exist without the inspiration from everyone who helped bring these amazing places to life.

In the 80s it was Natas Kaupas who helped bring skateboarding out of the backyard ramps & onto the streets. Grosso pay homage to this street pioneer in this Love Note.

Elijah BerleandGrosso talk Dogtown in the first Loveletter of Season 10. Time travel back to the 1980s when the skaters of Venice Beach, California helped change skateboarding forever.
