Anybody want to play some Vorthos Volleyball?!With so much focus on planeswalkers in Oath of the Gatewatch (both in the story and the cards) I thought this was an ideal time to start a round focused on those vivacious voyagers of the void! (Keep in mind, not every volley has to be about planeswalker cards, I just thought it would be fun to start off that way.)

A couple things before we get started…

  • For those who haven’t played Vorthos Volleyball before, you can find the rules explained in an earlier post by clicking on this bullet point.
  • NO MORE TEN-VOLLEY LIMIT!!
  • Quick reminder that there is no debating other players’ answers. The point of the game is to have fun, not be right.
  • ANYONE can play Vorthos Volleyball. Yes, everyone. That includes you, the person reading this right now. You. Come play with us.
  • I know I say this every time, but I really do highly,HIGHLY recommend checking out the notes for the post. I know that most of the people playing follow my blog and I love it when you respond to my volleys, but it is a LOT more fun when you all respond to each other too! So take a look at the most recent volley in the notes and make some new friends!

OK, now on to the opening volley! Have fun everyone!!

  1. What is the flavor of Nissa, Voice of Zendikar putting +1/+1 counters on other creatures? In the story so far she seems to be quite a loner.
  2. Zendikar Resurgent

“Who needs black mages?” Gideon to Jace (Gideon winks)

-Q: Why does Dimensional Infiltrator requires a land to blink?

1) It’s about hiding. The infiltrators can disappear under the land as easily as diving into water.

QUESTION TIME!!

1) Why do so many of Chandra’s damage abilities take away loyalty counters when burning stuff is, like, her FAVORITE pastime? Why isn’t she less loyal when you ask her to throw fire at something?

2) Chandra’s Phoenix

Once again it’s time to play some Vorthos Volleyball! In honor of all the new Eldrazi coming out in Battle for Zenikar, I thought it might be fun/interesting to try a round starting with the most commonly forgotten color: Colorless! (Keep in mind, not every volley has to be about colorless cards, I just thought it would be fun to start off that way.)

A couple things before we get started…

  • For those who haven’t played Vorthos Volleyball before, you can find the rules explained in an earlier post by clicking on this bullet point.
  • After ten consecutive volleys, please delete the content above your response, except for the question and/or flavorless card you’re responding to. (This is to prevent crashing people’s mobile dashboards, which has happened before.)Thanks to the recent update, NO MORE TEN-VOLLEY LIMIT!!
  • Quick reminder that there is no debating other players’ answers. The point of the game is to have fun, not be right.
  • ANYONE can play Vorthos Volleyball. Yes, everyone. That includes you, the person reading this right now. You. Come play with us.
  • As a final note, I highly recommend checking out the notes for the post. You might see some responses from people you don’t follow yet, and find some cool new blogs worth checking out!

OK, now on to the opening volley! Have fun everyone!!

  1. What is the flavor of cards that are colorless even though they have color in their casting cost? (Like Ghostfire or the new Devoid keyword?)
  2. Not of This World

1. Think of it like a generator. It takes the colored mana and just morphs it into colorless. Like a dam turning water energy into electricity. 2. “The eldrazi became vortexes, absorbing all mana into their relentless maws.” 1. What makes Ugin colorless? He could very well be Grixis or Izzet or something. 2. Kozilek, Butcher of Truth

1. The flavor text of Scion of Ugin shows that ugin was locked in a zendikari hedron prison for ages. Any color of him has been greyed out.

2. “The ageless, unsatisfiable hunger of the eldrazi is capable of consuming all - even ideals.”

My volley

1. If a player is a planeswalker, what is the flavor of changing decks? Are you taking on a new character role or are players powerful enough to carry grimoires from multiple colors/planes?

2. Goblin glory chaser

1. A Planeswalker is changing the set of spells they’re using. 2. Every mark on her shield is a tale of a suicide mission gone horribly wrong. 1. How did the Eldrazi gain color? 2. Emrakul, The Aeons Torn.

(Love the flavor text)

1 you are what you eat
2 “It is said that the eldrazi do not die, they merely sleep, but the truth is that they do not sleep, they merely wait.”

- - -

1. Krark-clan Ironworks is clearly a forge, generating it’s power from fire fueled by sacrificed artifacts. Why does it not produce red mana?

2. Isochron Scepter

1) The flavor is that the furnace produces artifacts, not spells.
2)A book preserves words. An echo repeats them. The scepter does both.

QUESTION TIME!!

1) What is the flavor of Howling Mine? Why scary would a mine make everyone smarter?
2) Darksteel Garrison

Time to play some Vorthos Volleyball! Thanks to everyone who suggested themes for this round. The most requested theme was a focus on Magic Origins or Core Sets in general, and since we’re right in the middle of spoiler season for Origins, that sounds good to me!

A couple things before we get started…

OK, now on to the opening volley! Have fun everyone!!

  1. Why can’t a creature become Renowned more than once? (Submitted by veenilla)
  2. Jace’s Sanctum (Submitted by elspethsunschampion)

Once a creature has made a name for itself, it never has a chance to capture the spotlight the same way again. People already know Baltha Stoneslinger, no need to hear about her again.

“It was the one place he could hear only himself think.”

1. How do the Rakdos keep from running out of members?

2. Eye of the Storm

1) The Rakdos have a HIGHLY EFFECTIVE graffiti campaign for recruiting new members. The two-word phrase they use isn’t suitable for all ages, but it’s approximate meaning is “We are opposed to the existence of rules, and refuse to follow any.”

2) “Never underestimate the power of an echo. In your ear, it can drive one mad. In the aether, it can reshape the world.”

QUESTION TIME!!

1) For the card art on Dwynen, Gilt Leaf Daen, does anybody know what the background is supposed to be? For the life of me, I can NOT figure it out.

2) The Great Aurora

1.) In the background, it appears to be several layers of sediment and rocked stacked a top each other which has plant and elf life growing on it.

2.) “Every ten years, all of society’s progress is reversed in a single, mystical night.”

Questions;
1.) Kothophed is said to be a very powerful demon, yet has a similar ability to Blood Gift Demon. Are demons on Innistrad more powerful, or what?

2.) Flavor text for Thopter Spy Network.

1) Kothophed is able to do much more than just what’s on his card. His ability just represents what he’s willing to do for YOU.

2) If you can see the thopters, they can see you. If you can’t see the thopters, it’s because you’re already in prison.

QUESTION TIME!!

1) How do you interpret the flavor of Pyromancer’s Goggles?

2) Hangarback Walker

1) It serves as inspiration. I suppose many fire mages have heard of Jaya and idolize her (as Chandra does), so wearing the goggles is probably super empowering and really brings out a mage’s inner fire.

2) “Just one can release an army of thopters large enough to darken the sky.”

Questions:

1) How does Youthful Scholar attack and/or block when his ankles are chained together and he’s shackled to the wall?

2) Flavour text for Tasigur, the Golden Fang.

1) You wouldn’t believe the arsenal he keeps hidden in all those pillowcases.

2) Every Sultai Khan shared two similarities. They each took part in the previous Khan’s death. And they never expected their own.

QUESTION TIME!!!

1) What is the flavor of Disciple of the Ring having four options for her activated ability?

2) Outland Colossus (my kids’ favorite)

stoketheflavor THIS is an example of Vorthos Volleyball (in case you were still curious)

1. Each corresponds to a part of the rings they love so much: the center point of the circle that the ring creates, the area inside the ring, the ring itself, the area outside the ring. (The mapping is left as an exercise for the reader).

2.Nylea’s emissaries rarely come to negotiate.

Questions:

1. What are some artifacts we’ve seen that Dack has probably stolen?

2. Pia and Kiran Nalaar

1) Tatsumasa, the Dragon Fang, Shell of the Last Kappa, Mox Opal, and Mindslaver

2) Chandra’s pyromancy may have been new, but her parents had been stoking her inner flame for years.

QUESTION TIME!!

1) I understand the card draw doubling of Alhammarret’s Archive, but what’s the flavor of doubling life gain?

2) Days Undoing

In the giveaway I’m currently doing, I asked people to tell me why they followed my blog and what they want to see more of. One of the most frequent requests was MORE VORTHOS VOLLEYBALL!! So I guess that means it’s time for a new round!

A while back, somebody mentioned that the rounds often seem to focus on creatures and other permanents (which is probably true because Creature is my favorite card type.) So I figure that a focus on Instants and Sorceries might be a nice change of pace!

A couple things before we get started…

OK, now on to the opening volley! Have fun everyone!!

  1. What is the flavor of cards with Buyback? Why does playing extra mana let you reuse them later?
  2. Crib Swap

2. Changelings are firm believers in the phrase “it takes a village to raise a child”. They just don’t feel that it has to be their village.

1. Why does Festering Goblin give -1/-1 to creatures that were nowhere near it when it died? And why does it choose what gets the rot?

2.Undead Alchemist

1) His infection is most contagious right after he dies. You basically get to throw his disgusting corpse at somebody.

2)His unnerving gaze breaks your concentration, while his friends break your door.

QUESTION TIME!

1) Why does Edge of Autumn not work when you have too many lands?

2)Cyclical Evolution

Anybody want to play some Vorthos Volleyball?!Shadows Over Innistrad has brought us back to THE premier “top-down” plane, so obviously its release this weekend warrants a round the game made for fans of flavor! (Keep in mind, not every volley has to be about cards from Shadows Over Innistrad, the themes are always just there to get things started.)

A couple things before we get started…

  1. What is the flavor of Briarbridge Patrol putting a creature into play when you sacrifce three Clues?
  2. Bygone Bishop

1) Its pulling its buddy into the investigation. Weve learned so much, we need help.
2) “He guides lost souls through the madness of Innostrad.”

Hedron Alignment

  • Flavor Text for Hedron Alignment:The hedrons are a direct reflection of Nahiri herself. Intricately complex yet astonishingly direct.

QUESTION TIME!!

  1. What is the flavor of Werewolf of Ancient Hunger becoming weaker when your opponent discards cards?
  2. Sage of Ancient Lore

Werewolf of Ancient Hunger is weaker because he loses interest in attacking your opponent. They’re like doggie treats: you have enough to lead him on the attack, but your opponent isn’t as enticing.

1. Why isn’t Geralf’s Masterpiece a legendary creature?

2. Geralf’s Masterpiece

Answer to both 1 and 2:
“To Geralf, anything he’s never tried before is considered a masterpiece.”

QUESTIONS!

1) Why do you have to sacrifice Clues to use them?

2) Accursed Witch / Infectious Curse
