Trust

Blackwall Masterpost
Related Quest: Champions of the Just

The PC approaches Blackwall at Haven.

Blackwall: Of all the things in the world… a demon who wears someone’s face. I imagine it makes trusting others risky.

Dialogue options:

  • General: Trust is important. [1]
    + Blackwall slightly approves
  • General: What’s life without risk? [2]
    + Blackwall slightly approves
  • General: I don’t trust anyone. [3]

1 - General: Trust is important.
PC: Without trust, how would we build alliances? Or friendships? [4]

2 - General: What’s life without risk?
PC: Risk is what keeps life exciting, don’t you think?
Blackwall: Until you lose. [4]

3 - General: I don’t trust anyone.
PC: It’s best to rely on yourself. People are selfish.
Blackwall: A lonely way to exist, but practical. I cannot fault you for it. [4]

4 - Scene continues.

Blackwall: It’s easy to speak well of trust when yours has never been misplaced.

Scene ends.

What Was I Like

Blackwall Masterpost
Related Quest: In Hushed Whispers

The PC approaches Blackwall at Haven.

Blackwall: There was never going to be an easy answer to the mage dilemma.

Blackwall (mages allied): What you did for the mages took courage. You gave them a chance. Everyone deserves one.
Blackwall (mages conscripted): The mages are dangerous. There’s no way around it.

Blackwall: You chose for the good of us all. I can respect that.

Blackwall (if in party for IHW): I have to ask: what was I like in that dark future you saw?

Dialogue options:

  • General: You were heroic. [1]
    + Blackwall approves
  • General: You were angry. [2]
  • General: You were the same. [3]
  • General: Don’t ask. [4]

1 - General: You were heroic.
PC: You fought with honor and died a hero. You did the Wardens proud.
Blackwall: Then I was worth something in the end. Thank you. [5]

2 - General: You were angry.
PC: You were furious about the circumstances.
Blackwall: Angry. Good. I’m glad I was angry. It means I never stopped caring. [5]

3 - General: You were the same.
PC: You didn’t seem much different.
Blackwall: Does that mean I remained unbroken or simply stopped caring? I guess we’ll never know. [5]

4 - General: Don’t ask.
PC: It’s better if some things are left forgotten.
Blackwall: All right. I won’t mention it again. [5]

5 - Scene ends.

So This Is Skyhold

Blackwall Masterpost
Related Quest: In Your Heart Shall Burn

The PC walks up to Blackwall, who is looking up at the buildings of Skyhold.

Blackwall: So this is Skyhold.

He turns to the PC.

Blackwall: Come. Let’s walk the ramparts. I want to examine our fortifications.

The two of them move up to the ramparts, where Blackwall looks over the mountains.

Choice dependent dialogue:

  • Recruited pre-Skyhold [1]
  • Recruited pre-Skyhold, never spoken to [2]
  • Recruited post-Skyhold [3]

1 - Recruited pre-Skyhold

Blackwall: We’ll be able to see Corypheus coming from miles away.

Dialogue options:

  • General: We’re safe for now. [4]
  • General: If we see him, he sees us. [5]
  • General: And we’ll be ready for him. [6]

4 - General: We’re safe for now.
PC: Corypheus thinks we’re beaten. By the time he finds us, we’ll be legion.
Blackwall: I know soldiers. I know oursoldiers. Corypheus made a hundred enemies when he kicked down our door.
Blackwall: Let him come. I swear I’ll take that twisted bastard down, even if I have to die to do it.
Blackwall (previously flirted): And when he came after you, he really made it personal. I swear I’ll take that twisted bastard down, even if I have to die to do it. [13]

5 - General: If we see him, he sees us.
PC: On the other hand, that means he can see us from miles away.
Blackwall: Let him come. I swear I’ll take that twisted bastard down, even if I have to die to do it. [13]

6 - General: And we’ll be ready for him.
PC: He’s not going to get the better of us again.
Blackwall: We lost good soldiers that day…loyal men and women.
Blackwall: Let him come. I swear I’ll take that twisted bastard down, even if I have to die to do it.
Blackwall (previously flirted): And when he came after you, he really made it personal. I swear I’ll take that twisted bastard down, even if I have to die to do it. [13]

2 - Recruited pre-Skyhold, never spoken to:

Blackwall: Solas chose well. We’ll be able to spot an invading force from miles away. For as long as I’ve been here, we’ve never really spoken at length.

Dialogue options:

  • General: No, I’m sorry. [7]
    + Blackwall slightly approves
  • General: Actions speak louder. [8]
  • General: Chatting wastes time. [9]

7 - General: No, I’m sorry.
PC: We haven’t, have we. Sorry about that.
Blackwall: Don’t apologize. You have responsibilities, and I don’t need coddling. Our energies should be focused on Corypheus. He’ll pay for Haven. I swear I’ll take that twisted bastard down, even if I have to die to do it. [13]

8 - General: Actions speak louder.
PC: Your actions told me all I needed to know.

PC (Blackwall neutral/high approval): And it seems I made the right decision by bringing you on board.
Blackwall: You’ve always had my support. You still do. Corypheus will pay for Haven. I swear I’ll take that twisted bastard down, even if I have to die to do it. [13]

PC (Blackwall low approval): Unfortunately, it seems we disagree on crucial matters.
Blackwall: Getting Corypheus is the goal. We shouldn’t lose sight of that. Our energies should be focused on Corypheus. He’ll pay for Haven. I swear I’ll take that twisted bastard down, even if I have to die to do it. [13]

9 - General: Chatting wastes time.
PC: I have no use for idle chatter.
Blackwall: I can respect that. It’ll serve you well now. Our energies should be focused on Corypheus. He’ll pay for Haven. I swear I’ll take that twisted bastard down, even if I have to die to do it. [13]

3 - Recruited post-Skyhold

Blackwall: Skyhold is in a fine position. It will be difficult for any enemy to approach without being seen. Harder still for Corypheus, with his army and pet dragon in tow. I’d count myself lucky that I missed the assault, but I should have been there.

Dialogue options:

  • General: You’ll have your chance. [10]
    + Blackwall slightly approves
  • General: Tell that to the dead. [11]
  • General: No glory in that death. [12]

10 - General: You’ll have your chance.
PC: It’s not over with Corypheus. The next time we meet, you’ll be on the front line.
Blackwall: The front line, is it? I’ll hold you to that. Blackwall: I swear I’ll take that twisted bastard down, even if I have to die to do it. [13]

11 - General: Tell that to the dead.
PC: There are dozens dead who’d rather be in your position, I promise you.
Blackwall: We’ll drink to them, then avenge them. I swear I’ll take that twisted bastard down, even if I have to die to do it. [13]

12 - General: No glory in that death.
PC: It was a survival. Not a battle. There was no glory in it.
Blackwall: It’s not about glory. It’s about keeping your promises. I’m a Grey Warden. He’s a darkspawn.
Blackwall (previously flirted): And when he came after you, he really made it personal. I swear I’ll take that twisted bastard down, even if I have to die to do it.
Blackwall: I swear I’ll take that twisted bastard down, even if I have to die to do it. [13]

13 - End choice dependent dialogue.

Dialogue options:

  • General: Thank you. [14]
    + Blackwall slightly approves
  • General: You’re taking this hard. [15]
    + Blackwall slightly disapproves
  • General: You’re no good to me dead. [16]
    + Blackwall slightly disapproves
  • Flirt: I’m not losing you. [17]
  • + Blackwall approves

14 - General: Thank you.
PC: I’m grateful for your support.
Blackwall: It’s my job, isn’t it? Killing darkspawn? Look, in spite of it all, there is hope. The people flock to your banner. They believe in you.

15 - General: You’re taking this hard.
PC: You see this as a personal insult, don’t you?
Blackwall: If it’s not personal for you, maybe it should be. The people flock to your banner, eager to fight for the Herald of Andraste. Their faith is a leash, and your Inquisition has taken hold of it.

16 - General: You’re no good to me dead.
PC: Watch that this enthusiasm of yours doesn’t get you killed.
Blackwall: I wouldn’t be the first to die in your service. The people flock to your banner, eager to fight for the Herald of Andraste. Their faith is a leash, and your Inquisition has taken hold of it.

17 - Flirt: I’m not losing you.
PC: I’m not losing anyone to Corypheus. Especially not you.

Blackwall (PC in relationship with Sera): Ah, perhaps that sentiment is best expressed to someone other than myself. Sera, for example? The encounter with Corypheus has left her shaken. She could use a kind word. Look, in spite of it all, there is hope. The people flock to your banner. They believe in you. [25]

Blackwall (PC in relationship with Josephine): Ah, perhaps that sentiment is best expressed to someone other than myself. Namely Josephine. She’s more deserving of your attention than I am. Look, in spite of it all, there is hope. The people flock to your banner. They believe in you. [25]

Blackwall (PC in relationship with Cullen): Ah, perhaps that sentiment is best expressed to someone other than myself. Cullen for instance. He’ll need your support in the days to come. Look, in spite of it all, there is hope. The people flock to your banner. They believe in you. [25]

Blackwall: You can’t afford to think I’m special. I’m a soldier, no different than any soldier lost at Haven. I am fond of you, it’s true, but we can’t let this go any further. This—whatever you want this to be—is impossible.

Dialogue options:

  • General: Why not? [18]
  • General: You’re right. [19]

General: Why not?
PC: Why is it impossible? I know you have feelings for me.
Blackwall: My lady, don’t. You’re the Inquisitor, the Herald of Andraste. Even now there are people flocking to your banner, ready to serve—to die. We must remain focused on the task at hand.

Dialogue options:

  • Special (claimed not chosen): I’m not Andraste’s Herald. [20]
  • General: You all matter. [21]
  • General: You’re evading. [22]
  • General: I don’t do self-sacrifice. [23]

20 - Special: I’m not Andraste’s Herald.
PC: I’m not what they say I am. I never asked them to believe.
Blackwall: But they do, and it’s too late to go back. Whoever you were is gone. They believe you’re the Herald because they need to. Without that hope, all that’s left is danger. [24]

21 - General: You all matter.
PC: I care for you, just as much as I do them. Can’t you just accept it?
Blackwall: I wish it were simple. Believe me, I do. But it’s not. [24]

22 - General: You’re evading.
PC: Why make it about them? Or the war? It doesn’t have to be.
Blackwall: I wish it were simple. Believe me, I do. But it’s not. [24]

23 - General: I don’t do self-sacrifice.
PC: I’m not throwing my life away because of what they say I am.
Blackwall: I wish it were simple. Believe me, I do. But it’s not. [24]

24 - Scene continues.

Blackwall: We’re both bound by duty. Our lives aren’t ours to live. Don’t make this harder than it has to be.

Scene ends.

19 - General: You’re right.
PC: You’re right. This should go no further.
Blackwall: Thank you, my lady. You’ll see that this is for the best. Look, in spite of it all, there is hope. The people flock to your banner. They believe in you. [25]

25 - Scene continues.

Blackwall: Tell me honestly, are you what they say you are? Andraste’s chosen?

Dialogue options:

  • General: Yes. [26]
  • General (claimed not chosen): I’m not. [27]
  • General: I don’t know. [28]

26 - General: Yes.
PC: I was chosen by Andraste. She saved me. We shouldn’t question it.
Blackwall (neutral/high approval) : I don’t. We all need to believe in something.
Blackwall (negative approval): All right. I’ll take on faith that she saw something in you that I haven’t. [29]

27 - General: I’m not.
PC: I wish they’d understand that I’m really nobody.
Blackwall: You’re somebody. Don’t you see what you are to them? Without you, they’d be consumed by despair. We all would. They need you to be Andraste’s messenger. It gives them hope. The truth doesn’t matter.
Blackwall (neutral/high approval): Ah, listen to me talk. You’re time is valuable, and I’ve wasted enough of it.
Blackwall (negative approval): Ah, this chatter gets me nowhere, and I tire of it. [29]

28 - General: I don’t know.
PC: There is so little I remember. What if they’re right?
Blackwall: Does it even matter? Don’t you see what you are to them? Without you, they’d be consumed by despair. We all would. They need you to be Andraste’s messenger. It gives them hope. The truth doesn’t matter.
Blackwall (neutral/high approval): Ah, listen to me talk. You’re time is valuable, and I’ve wasted enough of it.
Blackwall (negative approval): Ah, this chatter gets me nowhere, and I tire of it. [29]

29 - Scene ends.
