Go-go has been the soundtrack of Washington, D.C., since the 1970s. Go-go is a subgenre of funk with strong ties to rhythm and blues, Hip-Hop, and Latin music. It has survived and evolved through the sheer will and grassroots efforts of its artists and dedicated fans. Go-go serves as a cultural mouthpiece for the region and reflects the unique musical, artistic, social, and cultural stylings of the city.
Experience Unlimited, or “E.U.,” a D.C.-based go-go band, cemented its place in popular culture with the award-winning 1988 Billboard Hot 100 hit “DaButt.” Led by singer and bassist Gregory “Sugar bear” Eliot, and backed by drumming legend Ju Ju House, E.U. has toured and recorded for over 30 years. The group has scored hits with rap pioneers Salt-N-Pepa (“Shake Your Thang”) and Kurtis Blow (“Party Time”). Singer-song-writer Back sampled E.U.’s music in his 1996 song “Where It’s At.”
