One of my darker pieces from Folktale Week.
Kelpies are Scottish shape-shifting fey of lakes and rivers. Sometimes a man and sometimes a horse and never to be trusted.
Roan has built a pretty good rapport with Riabhach and they’ll help each other out from time to time. Sometimes this manifests as “Please help me rescue my girlfriend from the people who murdered your infant son”, but more often it’s “I’m going fishing, you can have some if you help me” or, as depicted here, “I have something stuck in my teeth, please get it out for me”. He understands quite clearly that she will not share her fish with him if he bites her.
A water horse’s head is somewhat less equine when seen from this angle.
