wildbow with rain’o’fire frazier’s character arc after the end of the fallen compound arc

ward is the only wildbow work that i think actually shouldbe edited even though it’s not too likely to be because it has the lowest lows and the highest highs of anything he’s done. if it was like 50% less homophobic and 25% better paced but kept all the themes and character dynamics it explores it would genuinely be a masterpiece imho

Also, since she made an appearance in the latest chapter, periodic reminder that I’m pretty sure Alabaster is the real final villain of Pale. (Of course Wildbow would make the literal Spirit of Mercy be a villain.)

I know that we’ve been all about the Bonesaw tumblr discourse lately, but can we talk about the fact that Burnscar was a confirmed weeb. She’s seen in the S9 arc reading graphic novels and it mentions specifically that she really likes them. You know she was turning her flames into Gundams. Giving villain speeches from Naruto.

Right before Brian killed her, she managed to say “oh I get to die like my favorite character from One Pi-”

And You know what? You know what, fuck it, the more I think about it, and the more I reread the relevant passages, the more I like Brian and Taylor as a couple. It’s cute. It’s dysfunctional. It’s doomed. It’s buoyed on a wave of mindless teenaged horomones that segues into patently unstable trauma-bonding that folds in a month. Moreover Taylor’s physical and emotional attraction to Grue read as extremely believable and authentic to me, and while there is absolutely no way she’s straight there’s also no way that she isn’t attracted to men, either. Show of hands if you like the main canonical romantic pairing of Worm on it’s face and wished people would engage with it more in fan works instead of treating it as a speedbump on the way to pairing her with, geez, literally every other single person in the principle cast, the whole ancillary cast, about a third of the background characters and, god help us, Greg.

Okay, so, inspired by this post and with thanks/curses to @minitiate for getting the general idea stuck in my head.

So, the Slaughterhouse 9 actually all do make great avatars of the Fears, don’t they? Or at least, it seems like they should?

The Siberian is pretty obvious-the invulnerable, unstoppable, impervious beast with a taste for human flesh and playing with her food. Who toys with you, letting you think you have a real chance of escape, taking a single bite out of you each time she catches up then letting you keep running? A Hunter par excellence

Burnscar’s equally clear-the normal-seeming, haunted girl addicted to the flame, dancing and vanishing between different fires, growing increasing gleeful and maniacal and powerful the more of an inferno she surrounds herself with? Desolation.

Now Bonesaw could be either of Flesh or Corruption, I think. The chipper, gleeful chirurgeon with the gleaming scalpel, cutting you apart and remaking you into a horrible caricature of whatever trait she found most interesting, treating you as a beloved pet or sibling as she does.

Shatterbird’s not exactly the traditional vessel, but she’s the city-wide, impersonal and uncaring massacre, killing hundreds of thousands of people she’s never seen and will never care about for even a moment, all to glorify her own ego and make an impression. So, Slaughter.

Crawler I could see being either Flesh or Hunt, depending on the exact focus. But he’s the massive, disgusting monster out of your nightmares, covered in eyes and tendrils and dripping acid from his gaping maw. Who laughs joyously as cut and shoot and burn him, his flesh reknitting into even stranger and more terrible designs. So I’d probably lean towards Flesh.

But I honestly can’t really place Jack. I mean, would the sleazily corrupting devil-on-your-shoulder Hannibal Lecter serial killer be Web? Dark? What?

Maybe a stretch, but I’d pin Jack as being a beholding Avatar. He’s fundamentally in it for the show, he’s a voyeur to his own fights, he knows vastly more than he should about his opponents, there’s an emphasis on communicating terrible truths and stripping away what he perceives to be people’s delusions about themselves. The manipulation inches towards web, but it’s not like Jonah Magnus didn’t spend a lot of time setting up absurd scenarios in order to observe the exact method by which it would collapse into entertaining chaos, and categories are bullshit anyways.

And she takes you in her violent arms
And you stare into the violent sun
And you know this will be gone in the morning
And the flesh in the machinery jams
And they come to take the rest of our hands
But the feeling of her skin on your fingers

And you can barely make a silhouette out
And you open your ventriloquist mouth
And the words are wrong but in the right order

@autistictaylorhebert for the great song idea.  Violent Sun by Everything Everything, absolutely devastating when applied to Lisa and Taylor.

I just realized how Bonesaw’s trial for Panacea was an inverted recreation of her owntrial. Bonesaw was forced to save people again and again until her capacity to care was broken. She inflicts the same thing on Panacea, first by having her creations attack her directly, then by attacking her father, forcing her to use her powers until her moral rules on killing and working on the brain were broken. Riley saw Amy as a sister, and so she tried to break her down in the same way she was broken.

Man, those two have such an interesting and fucked-up relationship. I wondered what they talked about while working together during the Scion-pocalypse. Did Bonesaw keep trying to claim they were alike? Hell, did she try to distanceherself from Panacea, so she could avoid falling into the Slaughterhouse Nine mindset? She kept referring to Amy as “Big sis,” even while Panacea was pretty adamant about being around her to keep her in check. How did she feel about that? Did she remind Amy that she was assigned to keep herin check too?

One of my headcanons about the entities is that early on in their history, before they worked out the kinks, a really, reallycommon mode of failure for the cycle was the regulatory avatar “getting lost in character” and either forgetting about, disregarding, or actively sabotaging the cycle in favor of pursuing whatever their on-paper  cover-story “day job” was, Omni-man style. A similar mode of failure would have been shards going native en masse the way the wretch did after deciding they were more invested in their individual hosts than in the overall wellbeing of the cycle.

In both cases the root issue would be the entity being psychologically incapable of predicting a deviation from the grand unified goal. In the first scenario, there’s a naïve belief that their own priorities will remain the same when filtered through a proxy personality, so they accidentally put on a mask lined with fishhooks. In the latter, there’s a failure to imagine that the glorious group consensus that got them off their homeworld could ever shatter in the face of new experiences, so the shards were put on inadequate leashes.

The corollary headcanon is that this isn’t something that happens anymore, due to natural selection; It’s the kind of error an entity would make early, and once, and then never do that or anything else ever again. Modern Day entities are descended from the ones smart enough to do more involved and competent PTV analysis before starting their cycles.

But out in the distant reaches of space, you might occasionally find a post-apocalyptic world, blursed by the presence of mad idiot gods, peppered with 120th-generation parabeings who are armed with the dregs of the once-mighty power reserve.
