I’m as tired of Nylander drama as the next Leafs fan, but y'all out here saying we don’t need Willy don’t know what the fuck you’re talking about. Left side wing is weak outside of Johnsson, right side wing is weak outside of Mitch and Kappy. No one is giving us a top pair defenseman without getting a promising prospect back and we’d still need another top 9 winger.
So slow your Willy hating roll and save it for Saturday or games against Boston.
Oh my God, I am begging y'all to read one of the countless articles written about how the leafs can sign Tavares and keep the core of the Leafs together for the future. Just read one! It’s doable and from Dubas’ own words they have a plan in place specifically to do so. Tavares took a discount *specifically so they could do so.*
Also Willy is a RFA who was offered a qualifying contract before the deadline. The Leafs plan to keep him. There are other players we can trade before we need to worry about losing any of the Big Three for cap relief.
The Islanders don’t have the draft picks necessary to offer sheet Willy any kind of contract that makes sense for them. The likelihood of Willy signing an offer sheet for the team in the beginning stages of a rudderless rebuild is very fucking slim- not when he’s been basically guaranteed great minutes playing with Auston Matthews.
It’s probably going to take a large part of the summer to work out a deal everyone can agree on. No news is honestly good news at this point- it means no one is rushing into things without a clear head and a solid plan.
