Slide 1: “Naha morning never ends”, 2021
Slide 2: “Naha Morning”, 1979

Naha Morning was sketched in 1979, where the Sea of Japan meets the Pacific Ocean at the top of Okinawa. The rainbow floats on the crystal turquoise waves between the Islands of the Ryukyus, touching only sky and water. The blocks created for this print were all carved by hand and took a year to complete due to the intricate detail. Using five if the seven of these hand carved blocks from 1979, I have recreated “Naha Morning” in a 2021 version “Naha morning never ends”. By adding three CNC routes blocks, I have revised the sunrise in Naha, Okinawa. The southwest has always held a special place in my heart…
I met Toshi in 1974 while studying with his younger brother, Hodaka. Toshi followed in the footsteps of his father, Hiroshi Yoshida, by creating in a similar style for most of his career. This “Indian Village” print is from Toshi’s brief period of experimenting with abstraction after his father’s death in 1950.
