John and Greg were assigned to work on the full year’s accounts for one of their accountancy firm’s clients - a large utilities provider. They stayed in the office late one night because they had discovered a number of anomalies in the paperwork they were checking.
In order to ascertain what was going on they called their main contact in the utilities company. They were complemented on their diligence and were told they would be commended to one of the partners in the accountancy firm.
Hanging up the phone they decided to call it a day. There was nothing more they could do that night, and so they would head home. Little did they know neither of the men would make it to their homes.
Their main contact quickly made a few calls to people he knew. He couldn’t risk the scam being revealed, so he arranged for the two to disappear for a while in order to get ‘retrained’.
When they resurfaced they no longer had the mental capacity to be auditors, in fact they could only just about count and read. Over the past few days they had been brainwashed to forget their previous lives, and accept their new roles as part of the utility company’s loyal, hardworking workforce.
