The 100+ figures in this large 19th- and 20th-century Presepio were collected in Italy over a period of more than thirty years by the late Elizabeth Anne Evans of Bucks County. A Presepio, which has been called “the translation of the Bible into Neapolitan dialect,” represents daily life in 18th-century Naples, a bustling port city. The miracle of the Nativity is depicted as taking place amid crumbling Roman ruins, signifying the end of the old Roman world and the dawn of Christianity.
