we need 2 normalize characters who dgaf about romance

sorry im literally so tired of everyone being shipped with someone can a guy not just chill

i want 2 say this isnt just about aro characters. im aro i love aro characters i love ace characters but this also is about allo characters. its normal and healthy and fine for alloromantic people to not be in romantic relationships and i wish media reflected that

Can’t two adult people just be happy they made a new friend sometimes.

Recently one of my betas asked my why there wasn’t any romance between my MC and the female lead in a book. That. Takes. Place. Within. One. Week. And the two know each other for half that time!

The beta was oh so sure there has to be some bed-tumbling between two singles in their twenties whose sexualities are never stated nor implied, just because hey, these are healthy twenty-something singles! And they aren’t explicitly stated to be ace! It’s their physical needs! They got to sleep together because one of them spent the night on another’s couch for two days while their city is under attack by an all-powerful psychopathic magician! They can’t help themselves! Because PhYsIcAl nEeDs.

A knife opened in my pocket but I’m a professional, so I only responded with a “Thank you for your feedback”.

You may consider adding some nice neat and sweet explanation why don’t have sex. If your beta asks about it, there is a chance some readers will have this question too. I remember that Lois McMaster Bujold did something like this in her first work about Vorkosigan Saga, where she had the main male lead and the main female lead travel together alone. At some point one of them, I think the story was from the point of view of the main female lead, but I don’t remember it well anymore, reflects how it can be perceived that they travel together alone and what they can be doing together, but at the same time points out that after walking for a whole day they are too tired and have no spare energy for sex. As far as I remember she put it into words better than I did here.

Those confused who did not pick on other more subtle clues why there is no sex will get a straightforward answer and if it is one of the characters who reflects on it, she or he will get points for feeling a bit more real and smarter for showing some awareness of how the situation may look to some from outside.

I will not do that because I find the notion that two adults have to want to have sex with each other after knowing each other for two days absolutely ridiculous and adding any sort of explanation as to why they don’t have sex makes having sex after two days seem like the norm.

Also, it was one beta out of a dozen and no one else had such problems.
