Skeletons have always been popular in art schools. Meet Mr. Skeleton from a 1578 engraving of an Academy of fine arts by Cornelis Cort. Notice that both the skeleton and the cadaver being sketched by students are hung by long ropes from the ceiling. It must have been difficult to concentrate on drawing the former during the active dissection of the latter.
