WatchingThe Old Guard yet again, and remembering that actually, yes, there isa perfect way to use “Cruel World” by Active Child on film. It happens at the end of the movie. It’s perfect and hopeful and completely in keeping with the mood of the scene.

SorryWill Bates, but this was a messed up choice for THAT SCENE in the finale of The Magicians season four. (You know the one.) It sent exactly the wrong message at that moment, and I’m still surly about it. Ugh.

Music design in The Magicians was honestly subpar. The lyrics were often confusingly inappropriate for what was happening on-screen, as if they weren’t taking the words into account at all. That irritates me. After he used “Evolve” by PhoriainA Life In a Day, I remember checking whether the designer was a native English-speaker. (He is.) The lyrics of that song are bizarre in context of the episode.

Among the many, many reasons thatThe Old Guard ranks in my top ten movies, the music by Volker BertelmannandDustin O'Halloran is just excellent. The sound design was supervised by Glenn FreemantleandBen Barker, and is likewise amazing.
