Chapter 7/16

Excerpt:

As soon as Otabek’s hand slipped out of Yuri’s at the airport early on Sunday morning, a sense of deep-seated dread settled over Yuri. He had spent over two months in the protection of Otabek’s warm embrace, knowing that if he so much as wobbled, Otabek would be there to steady him. Now Otabek was returning to Almaty to train for the new season, and things were going to change.

Although Yuri knew that his relationship with Otabek would weather the distance between them, he also knew that the era that had just ended would never come again. As Otabek faded from view, so did the existence of their sweet life together in St. Petersburg during that dark period in Yuri’s life. It was gone forever, lost to the relentless forward flow of time.

The reality of the loss hit Yuri like a sucker punch, and he doubled over in a silent sob as tears sprang to his eyes. When the salty wetness began to stream down his cheeks, Yuri fled, racing toward the exit of the airport. His instincts told him to go home, hole up in his bedroom, and wallow in sadness alone. However, after all the therapy he had been through, he was self-aware enough to realize that cutting himself off from the world was likely to get him in trouble again. He had promised Otabek that he would be okay, so he was left with only one choice: suck it up and ask for help.
