headcanon until proven otherwise that Essek’s primary disguise for many years–all of Caleb’s lifespan and many years after his death, in fact–is as Yussa’s nephew. It’s practically fool-proof. Many people know of Yussa, and they know Yussa as a recluse. Saying he is the reclusive archmage’s nephew gives him a home, a background, an identity. The son of Yussa’s long lost sister.
(Yussa doesn’t have a sister. But he has a deadname, and very few people who are still alive to know the difference. The important thing is if anyone goes searching for a Slythana Errenis, there is a record of her, even if she has been dead for a long, long time.
Allura knows, of course. And if anyone asks, she will confess to have formerly traveled with Slythana, and even helped babysit her young son. It helps to have powerful friends who will lie for you.)
When Caleb and Essek get married and buy a house in Nicodranas, the excuse is to stay near Essek’s aging uncle, to look after him.
It doesn’t hurt that Essek and Yussa already look a little bit alike. And Widogast Transmogification to look like a sun elf like Yussa is less of a hassle than anything else.
And–even if neither would admit it–it is a little nice to have family again, even if it is built on a forgery.
Keep your friends close and your mages closer.
