“AgainMa”: Lee Joon-gi’s story about getting second chance at life to punish evil

Lee Joon-gi is about to show you what justice is after getting a second chance at life.

On April 5, the press conference (production presentation) took place for SBS’s upcoming Fri-Sat drama “Again My Life.”

“Again My Life” is a revenge drama about a passionate prosecutor who comes back fully equipped in his second chance at life to bring evil to justice. Prosecutor Kim Hee-woo (Lee Joon-gi) travels back in time to a time when he was preparing to retake the college entrance exam. By drawing on the experience of having lived once, Hee-woo develops meticulous plans, makes predictions, and moves forward fast to execute “perfect revenge” by luring his opponents into his trap, promising to deliver a cathartic drama.

In introducing the drama, director Han Chul-soo said, “I think anyone has unfulfilled goals. This is a story that, by following the life of Kim Hee-woo, imagines how someone would fulfill such goals if given another chance at life to do so, how a prosecutor who had unfulfilled goals would strive to reach those goals, and whether or not those goals would be fulfilled.”

On playing the role Kim Hee-woo, Lee Joon-gi said: “[Hee-woo] gets killed while taking step after step to bring to justice the inner circle of evil, the greatest evil Jo Tae-sup. Following his wrongful death, he earns a second chance at life, another life he can live to punish the evil. This is about what kind of justice I [Kim Hee-woo] chooses; it is not simply about getting revenge, but he reflects on his life, sets goals, and struggles to reach them in his pursuit of justice. I had a question mark in my head about how to bring people catharsis, but then the script was very interesting. I hope you all enjoy Kim Hee-woo’s story about punishing the evil.”

On casting Lee Joon-gi, the director heaped praise on the actor: “It’s just my nature that when I set my sights on something, I get obsessed over it. From the very beginning, Lee Joon-gi was the actor I had in mind. Now we have been filming for about six months, and he has been doing so well on set, getting along so well with all the other actors, and he’s so well-mannered. Because of him, we have had so much fun on set.” Jung Sang-hoon also chimed in: “Joon-gi makes the set such a nice place to work at. Normally, people don’t get to have everything, but he is a great actor, too. At first I thought he was faking it, but it turned out, he genuinely treats people with sincerity.”

On turning down the offer at first, Lee Joon-gi shared: “All along [since the first offer], I had thought the project looked good and interesting. What concerned me was that it might be a parody of what I had done because, in the previous projects, I had already played characters that do so much, lead the way, and go through emotional ups and downs. I took a long time to think hard about it so it was not an easy choice to make. I thought, ‘I felt sorry letting this project go, but as much as I am investing more time into myself, I will do a project that is a bit different [from my previous projects],’ so I turned it down once.”

He continued: “I guess this is what you call ‘destiny.’ When I was still unable to make up my mind even after lots of thinking, they offered me another chance. So I took another look because I felt grateful to them for giving me another opportunity to choose. At the time, this thought gradually formed in my mind that, if I portrayed a character doing things I am good at and approaching it with a mindset that grew deeper with all the thinking I’d done, then I would be able to show people something new. After meeting with the director, I became more convinced.”

Kim Ji-eun said on her role: “Kim Hee-ah is the only daughter in the chaebol family. She is very confident, forward, and lovable. She wanted to do something else, but eventually joins Hee-woo in his fight as his ally to protect her family and company.”

On why he cast Kim Ji-eun, the director said: “She is beautiful and fresh. She has a lot going for her that makes her a symbol of youth. She is pure and innocent when she laughs. I thought she was the perfect choice for portraying Kim Hee-ah.”

On his character, Jung Sang-hoon jokingly said, “I play Lee Min-soo. When casting me, the director said, ‘This is a very attractive role. He’s a genius.’ And I thought it kind of suits me.” He added, “He went to this great university, switching from art school, to music school, to medical school, and then to law school. He’s a Da Vinci-level genius. There is nothing he doesn’t know about the world. So he finds it so boring until he meets Hee-woo and starts to find his life fun.”

On casting Jung Sang-hoon, the director sounded satisfied: “Jung Sang-hoon is confident and relaxed. It’s a must-have quality in a genius, and he does have that confidence. This actor can make people laugh, has great self-confidence, and is very talented. He’s been doing so well until now. He also helps make a great atmosphere on set.”

On her role, Kim Jae-kyung said: “Kim Han-mi is an illegitimate child of Kim Seok-hoon’s and used to live in her father’s shadows, thinking she wasn’t supposed to live her life the way she wanted. That’s what makes her so rebellious. But after meeting Kim Hee-woo, she changes and starts thinking, ‘I want to take risks and live a great life.’”

On casting Kim Jae-kyung, the director said: “Kim Jae-kyung is dynamic. I thought she could pull of this role, whose strength lies in her will not to remain a loser, despite her dark family secrets.”

On how this drama was different from his previous projects, Lee Joon-gi said, with the others bursting out laughing: “This is definitely different. In my previous projects, I was only seeking revenge. People even said they wished they could see Lee Joon-gi in a project where his [on-screen] parents are alive. My previous characters literally put their own lives at risk to seek revenge.” He continued, “This time around, I think we can bring viewers catharsis, thrill, and entertainment, as long as we share the same goals with the viewers.” He sounded confident when he said, “There’s revenge, but this drama will answer what kind of justice we are all dreaming of. I think it will show various emotions in a wide range of situations.”

On playing a character who travels back to 15 years ago and lives a second life, Lee Joon-gi said: “I was afraid of making this character look young, give off [youthful] energy, and have these [youthful] looks since he goes back in time. In that regard, though, the director gave me good guidance and created a good environment so I felt more comfortable at work. I’d say now that I found fun in living once again.”

On what to look out for in the drama:

Director Han Chul-soo said: “It is so dynamic that it gets you imagining things based on the web novel. Also, there is this uprightness and action you will see in Kim Hee-woo in his pursuit of justice.”

Lee Joon-gi showed his determination: “It would be my honor if this drama we have worked so hard on could bring strength, joy, and happiness to your lives in these tough times. I will do my best.”

Kim Ji-eun was confident that “this is not just a revenge drama, but it is interesting because [the characters] have very meticulous plans and take down [evil] one by one by closing in on them according to those plans. It will feel very cathartic, so I think you will feel satisfied and comfortable watching it.”

Jung Sang-hoon stressed: “I hope you don’t find it too heavy because it’s about ‘justice.’ People wonder if it is heavy, but it’s like martial arts fiction and, [when you watch] through the eyes of Hee-woo, it will bring you that catharsis you feel when things get smashed. I think lots of people will love it.”

Kim Jae-kyung added, “I’ve lived as Kim Han-min for the past few months and, as I watched Kim Hee-woo’s life unfold, it made me feel great and motivated me. I hope viewers get positive energy from watching this when they feel like ‘I am feeling down and depressed.’”
