When I worked as a part-time instructor before and didn’t have a car, I had to take a bus or train with my students to go to campus. The inside of the bus or train was narrow and the seats were uncomfortable, so it was impossible to do anything, and all I could do was look out the window. Even if painful and difficult affair is scheduled, at least it doesn’t happen on this bus or train. In a way, it can be said that the mess has been postponed… It was a time for me to rest my mind.

Now, I drive my car every day, and the house I live in is right next to the campus, so I don’t have a chance to stare blankly at the scenery flowing backwards from the window. The time I miss my lecturer days the most may be when I want to take a picture of the flowing scenery outside the bus window.

시간강사로 일했을 때에는 차가 없어서 학생들과 같이 버스나 기차를 타고 학교에 가야 했다. 버스나 기차 안은 매우 좁고 불편해서 뭔가 일을 하는 것은 불가능했고, 할 수 있는 일은, 그저 창 밖의 흘러가는 풍경을 바라보는 것뿐이었다. 뭔가 힘들고 어려운 일이 예정되어 있을 때도 있었지만, 어쨌든, 이 버스나 기차 안에서는 일어나지 않는다. 어떻게 보면 괴로운 일들이 약간 뒤로 미뤄진 상태라고 할 수도 있을 것 같다. 그래서 버스나 기차 안은.. 늘 마음을 조금 놓고 쉴 수 있는 시간이었다.

지금은 매일같이 직접 운전을 하고 집도 학교 바로 옆이어서, 창 밖의 흘러가는 풍경을 멍하니 바라볼 수 있는 기회가 없다. 시간강사 시절이 가장 그리운 때는, 버스 안에서, 흘러가는 풍경의 한 장을 카메라에 담고 싶을 때가 아닌가 싶다.
