On August 8, 2004, Icelandic female Kiska gave birth to her fifth calf and first daughter, sired by Kandu VII, at Marineland Canada.

Later known as Athena, as she was born during the Summer Olympics in Athens, she was healthy and very curious. Athena could often be seen interacting with guests in the underwater viewing areas.

She would sometimes copy the behaviors she saw Kiska and another whale, Ikaika, performing, as she was young and did not know as many behaviors as the older whales.

Unfortunately, Athena died sometime in 2009. Her cause of death has never been released.

On September 26, 2003, a group of around 30 whales were netted in Avacha Gulf, just off the southwest coast of Kamchatka, Russia. These were the very first whales netted in Russian waters.

Only one female was kept, while another female became extremely distressed, tried to escape, but drowned after becoming entangled in the nets. A second whale of unknown gender also became tangled in the nets, but it is unknown if this whale survived.

The unnamed female was kept in a sea pen for a number of days until she was transferred to the Utrish Dolphinarium on October 5, 2003.

Unfortunately, on October 19, 2003, the female died due to Bacterial Pneumonia after just 13 days in captivity. She also appeared to have suffered from Focal Fibrosis, Bullous Emphysema, and Cardiac Amyloidosis.

On May 31, 2003, Icelandic female Stella gave birth to her third calf, a female sired by Bingo, at Kamogawa Sea World in Japan.

Later known as Sarah, it was thought that she was a male until staff were able to properly determine her sex.

Sarah apparently did well in the beginning but reportedly became sick in May 2005. She recovered by August of the same year, but became ill again in April 2006 and had to be moved to a medical area where vets could monitor her health.

Unfortunately, on April 26, 2006, Sarah died due to unknown causes just a month shy of her third birthday.

On December 18, 1999, Icelandic female Nootka V gave birth to her fifth calf, a male sired by Kandu VII, at Marineland Ontario.

Later known as Algonquin, he was the second calf to be born in the new tank complex known as Friendship Cove. Not long after, he bonded with his half-brother Hudson, who was just 1 year older than Algonquin.

Algonquin was described as curious and people-oriented, which made him a rather poor performer. He preferred spending time interacting with guests through the underwater viewing windows as well as hunting sea gulls with Hudson.

Unfortunately, he was reportedly found dead at the bottom of the tank on August 13, 2002. His official cause of death was due to a Twisted Intestine.

On September 15, 1998, Icelandic female Kiska gave birth to her fourth calf, a male sired by Kandu VII, at Marineland Ontario. Later named Hudson, he was the first calf to be born in the new tank complex known as Friendship Cove.

In 1999, after the birth of his half-brother Algonquin, the two became very close and spent a lot of time together.

When Algonquin died in 2002, Hudson became less active, but more focused on trainers. Though Nootka V, Algonquin’s mother, became unusually aggressive towards Hudson after Algonquin’s death.

As a result of this aggression, Hudson apparently fell out of the tank during a staff Christmas party. He suffered a few rakes and scars, but was placed in a stretcher and back into the pool where he was separated from the females and kept with his father, Kandu VII.

During the summer of 2003, Hudson was moved to the old Orca tank, King Waldorf Theatre, in order to improve his performance skills. However, his half-sister, Neocia, was quite dominant and aggressive towards Hudson, so he was sent back to Friendship Cove.

Once there, he was reunited with Kandu VII, and later on, Kiska and Nootka V.

Hudson was described as a good performer, but liked to grab things around him which made it dangerous to perform waterworks with him. He was also allegedly trained for Artificial Insemination by the time he was 6, and semen was apparently collected from him, though there are no reliable sources to confirm this.

Unfortunately, on October 20, 2004, Hudson died suddenly due to Meningitis at only 6 years old.

On May 14, 1998, captive born female Taima gave birth to her first calf, a male named Sumar, sired by Tilikum at SeaWorld Orlando.

However, months after his birth, Taima began to attack Sumar and act unusually aggressive towards him. As a result, the two were permanently separated. Other females at the park, Katina and Kalina, reportedly cared for him until he was transferred to the San Diego park in March 1999.

Corky II, who by this time had already experienced the death of all 7 of her calves, became a surrogate mother to Sumar and was very close with him. Orkid, a captive born female, also befriended him and assisted in his care.

When the female named Bjossa arrived from the Vancouver Aquarium for medical treatment, she too seemed to take interest in Sumar. During his time at the San Diego park, he also befriended Ulises, Splash, Keet, Keto, and Nakai.

In April of 2000, Sumar was sent to the park in Aurora, Ohio with Keet and Keto. All 3 whales were sent back to the San Diego park in February 2001 when the Ohio park closed permanently.

Sumar was reportedly a very reliable performer and never showed aggression towards his trainers. He was used often for waterworks.

Unfortunately, Sumar died suddenly on September 7, 2010 due to Acute Intestinal/Mesenteric Volvulus.

A group of 10 Orcas were captured on February 9, 1997 in Hatajiri Bay in Japan. Five of the whales were released, while the remaining five whales were kept and sold to marine parks.

One of the females, known as Ku, was sold to the Taiji Whaling Museum. When she arrived, her health immediately began to deteriorate and she lost weight. She reportedly had several tumors that were removed after being discovered. She was sickly for about a year until she finally began to recover and eat properly.

Ku was soon placed with the Museum’s other female, named Nami. However, Nami was an aggressive whale, and the pair were separated as they did not get along. Ku was the friendlier whale who was often used to interact with guests, sometimes being touched by them.

In October 2003, Ku was sent to the Port of Nagoya Aquarium on a 5 year breeding loan. Ku was trained for Artificial Insemination and staff hoped she would become pregnant; but she disliked the procedure and it was stopped with her.

Ku performed alongside several smaller dolphins and was typically a very friendly whale. In the mid-2000’s, however, she was recorded lunging at a trainer standing on the slideout who had been reaching over into a bucket of fish.

In July 2008, Ku began refusing to eat and became very ill. She was moved to the medical pool where she slowly got better and recovered in August.

Unfortunately, on September 19, 2008, Ku was found dead at the bottom of the medical pool due to apparent heart failure. She had reportedly contracted a Herpes virus that weakened her immune system.

On February 9, 1997 in Hatajiri Bay in Japan, a group of ten Orcas were captured. Five were released while the remaining five were kept and sold to marine parks; two males and three females.

One female, named Asuka, was held at the Taiji Whaling Museum for a few days before being transferred to Izu-Mito Sea Paradise where she met the resident male, Tanouk.

The two got along well and staff hoped they would breed, but when Tanouk died in 2000, Asuka was kept alone and the breeding program was abandoned.

Asuka performed shows daily and spent the remainder of her life with a number of smaller dolphins.

Unfortunately, on September 19, 2007, Asuka died due to unknown causes.

A group of 10 Orcas were captured in Hatajiri Bay in Japan on February 9, 1997. Five of the whales were released while 3 females and 2 males were kept.

One male, later named Kyu, was sold to Nanki Shirahama Adventure World with an unnamed female and an unnamed male.

Unfortunately, the two unnamed whales died 4 months after their capture. Kyu was kept alone after their deaths.

In 1999, he began to participate in shows with his tankmates Ran, Ruka, and Goro; though Ruka died in 2000, leaving just the three of them.

When Kyu became sexually mature, he mated with Ran who gave birth to both her and Kyu’s first and only calf on August 26, 2004. However, the female calf was born premature and was born with a broken skull. She died 2 days after her birth, along with Ran who died the next day due to birth complications.

Less than a month later, Kyu also died on September 18, 2004 due to Bacterial Pneumonia.

It had been rumored that he suffered from ulcers as well as a weak immune system; though there are no reliable sources to confirm this.

One unnamed female, who was thought to be pregnant due to her size, was sent to Nanki Shirahama Adventure World with both males - one unnamed, and the other known as Kyu.

The park already owned 3 Orcas who were apparently very curious about the newcomers.

In April 1997, the female allegedly suffered a miscarriage, though there are no credible sources to confirm this.

Finally, on June 17, 1997, the female died due to Bronchopneumonia after only 4 months in captivity. She died just 3 days after the unnamed male.

On November 6, 1996, Icelandic female Kiska gave birth to her third calf, a male sired by Kandu VII, at Marineland Ontario. The calf, later known as Nova, was born in the old stadium, King Waldorf Theatre, where all the others had been born.

Because of overcrowding in the stadium, Nova and the other calves were moved to an indoor pool known as the “warehouse”, which is completely devoid of natural sunlight and fresh air.

In 1998, the new tank, known as Friendship Cove, was built and Nova, along with a few others, was reunited with his family. However, some of the whales were moved back to King Waldorf Theatre in the summer for shows.

A young female named Neocia was moved with Nova, but due to Neocia’s aggressive and dominant behavior, she was kept alone and Nova was sent back to Friendship Cove.

Unfortunately, on August 20, 2001, Nova died due to both Pneumonia and Starvation. Marineland, however, denied his death for many months.

However, she suffered from a weakened immune system, and was especially susceptible to seemingly harmless illnesses.

Nootka V would often attack Malik, resulting in their permanent separation when Malik was 13 months old. Malik was then moved to the “warehouse” - an indoor pool completely devoid of natural sunlight and fresh air. Here, she was kept with a number of other young whales.

In 1998, when the construction for the new pool, Friendship Cove, was completed, Malik was immediately sent there with other whales. She was mostly kept with her father, who reportedly treated her gently and was a good companion for her.

Unfortunately, on March 4, 2000, Malik died due to Immune System Deficiency.
