LIVE

A professor at my school who teaches Africana studies is apart of the black panther movement and is best friends with Tupac’s lovely mother Ms. Afeni Shakur

So I have to take one of her classes now.

John Singleton and his muse Janet Jackson filming Poetic Justice in California during the L.A Riots in April of 1992. Despite her privilege Poetic Justice amplified Janet’s interest in learning more about herself and what it meant to be an African American woman in America. This was the genesis of her tracing her roots and grounding herself in more political songs (“New Agenda feat Chuck D”)

John Singleton spoke on where Janet Jackson came up with the concept for her now iconic braids in an interview with Essence recently:

I wish I could take the pain away. If you can make it through the night there’s a brighter day. Everything will be alright if ya hold on, It’s a struggle everyday gotta roll on.

On this day in 1996, 2Pac dropped his 4th album “All Eyez On Me

The album featured five singles with two topping number one on the Billboard Hot 100; “How Do U Want It” and “California Love”. It made Hip Hop history as the first double-full-length solo Hip-Hop studio album released.

It was the second album from Tupac Shakur to hit number one on both the Billboard 200 and the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums charts, selling 566,000 copies in the first week.

On this day in 1995, 2Pac dropped “Me Against The World

This album came at one of the most pivotal times in ‘Pac’s life and career. Recorded shortly after his near-fatal assassination attempt in New York and released while he was in prison, this album marked a change in 2Pac as an artist and a man. Much less high energy than the tracks from his previous album Strictly 4 My N.I.G.G.A.Z…, this album showed genuine reflection on his life and career path as an artist along with shining light on some of his personal struggles with paranoia and self-loathing.

Debuting at #1 on the Billboard 200 chart, the album has been certified double platinum selling over 3.5 million copies in the United States alone.
